It sounds like you all have very nice, large mature gardens with lots of trees. I'm envious, mine is not very big and only 5 years old as all the beds were bare when we moved in. I've filled them but it doesn't have that lived in look which I love.
Today I managed to haul a concrete planter (left by previous owners) up onto some bricks, filled it up with rubble (from where I took up block paving) and put in an alpine plant which I forget the name of, but spreads and looks succulent, turns a gorgeous coppery red in the winter.
I had to keep stopping and watching as a robin sat near to me on the fence, my garden companion!!
I love it Joyce, since I've had this garden ive become so much more aware of nature around me and it literally soothes me. I'm not dead heading anything til spring so the birds and insects will be happy. Something is taking the seeds from the echinacea heads. I want my garden to be as wildlife friendly as possible.
After a full morning of allotmenteering I wasn't enthused about doing much else today.
Replanted some stuff I had dug up yesterday when laying out where the bricks will go for a new path. Quite excited about the new shade border created by moving the path, just waiting on 2 purple geranium phaeum to be delivered. Moved in my beautiful linaria peachy, hope it will be okay. If it hasn't been plant of the year it should have been.
Had a good look at all the stumps and boughs I had delivered. Allocated homes for most of them already. There's 17 of them, I must be a bit stronger today than yesterday as I now think I'll be able to move them all, even if I have to roll them or drag them on a tarp.
Cleared the greenhouse of the last few tomatoes, planted up pots with winter flowering plants, moved a few pots to give them some winter protection and did a bit of weeding.
Saved a few sweet pea heads and have just podded the seeds so will sow them today.
Had to cut it short to attend dinner at the inlaws. Not a good evening for various reasons so feeling a bit blue this morning. Will cheer myself up by going to the garden centre for some nice cheery tulip bulbs!
No more gardening outside for me until spring. So yesterday I took a bike ride along the river to feed birds, then came home and spent the afternoon on the ladder stringing Christmas lights along the roof of my house and garage.
Morning tootles, we don't do meals at inlaws anymore, too much grief....you can choose your friends but not your family, hope you make it to the GC for some nice spring bulbs.
you are keen Johnny with your christmas lights. i'm lucky if i get ours up the week before, we are not very christmassy i'm afraid to say, i feel it is just all so commercial most of it is glutanous and disgusts me.
But on a happier note, i tidied the stag border this morning in the sunshine, since then it has been on/off showers out of nowhere, i thought the pic might brighten peoples day, the border is actually where we buried our two horses (cremated) and two of our dogs

Love it when a robin keeps me company in the garden

Love your stag border Loana. Beautiful colours and layout. Lovely place to remember your lost pets.
Nice to know I'm not alone with inlaw issues. It's so draining. I'm going have to politely avoid them for a while as it plays on my mind far too much.
Very pleased with my tidy borders as a result of todays efforts. Sitting back with a cuppa now.
Thought the “ Stag “ bed excellent
No gardening today as I have been at allotment
I got 2 Acers last year , one is doing well , the other good wind damaged in g/h for moment to see if it recovers
