I've used two types of splitting machines. One with a wedge which splits and another type with a screw type arrangement. I've used boths, but hated the screw type. Wood tended to want to spin before it got a grip
We have done it by, hand ( together) for 10 years however the sheer volume of wood we have from two mature beech trees is overwhelming us
yes it was expensive but OH reckons it has paid for itself in one day. We did used to hire one but that puts pressure on you to use in a day. So, he spent a long time researching the best machine and we went for and electric one. Came from Ryetec based in Yorkshire it's an ECO 85 7 ton. Oh wants me to say it's needs two people to move it. Good thing is it is in the garage!

Hello folks - we're home stuffed to the gills with fish & chips, baklava and ice cream - just falling asleep on the sofa now - got Poldark programmed to record.
Will post some seaside fish & chips pics tomorrow

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Our new friends came round for lunch time drinks and to see the cottage. Spent 2 hours chatting. Went for a walk on footpaths around a nearby village this afternoon and finished in the pub with a beer.

I love splitting logs. It's hugely therapeutic.
We will have two log burners in the new house. OH wants a dooberry for splitting wood. I have no idea what make/model/size to look at.
Any suggestions?

I reckon a decent chunky machine would be a fair old price. Could you hire one ,maybe once a year and do them en masse?
