Independence Day?

  • First point that needs to be made is that the referendum result is not legally binding and the Governent has no need to act upon it. Second, is that leaving the EU is dependent on the Government activating Article 50. So the longer they delay, the longer we will be in.

I noted this morning with a chuckle all the areas that voted leave overwhelmingly are the ones begging for the Tories to maintain their protected EU funding. That won't be happening.

Anyone else see the announcement that the Bank of England has £600 BILLION in liquid assets available to support the market? There's the real reason for six years of austerity. They've been saving up for this very situation all this time.

This is also looking like the last death throes of the Union, Whether it's Scotland and NI leaving, or England leaving, it's looking more and more like a dead duck. I'm personally still annoyed at being told that the only way to protect Scotlands place in the EU was to vote no to independence :/

I've stayed out of this as I don't want involved in a repeat of the other threads that caused so much discord recently, but I've just read that an online petition to have a 'referendum rerun' has passed 1,000,000 signatures, so now they have to debate it in Parliament.... imageimage

    Part two anyone ?  image

Jimmy - they announced yesterday that the B of E was ready to put gazillions of shekels in to the economy to help....image

Maybe they were just sitting on it for this year's  Christmas party....image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • The only petition I'm aware of is one for another Scottish Indy referendum on the basis that pretty much everything we were told during the campaign has either not arrived or was an outright fib.

There are claims being made that because there was less than 75% turnout and below 60% in favour of leaving, there are grounds for the referendum to be rerun.  I have no idea whether or not there is any basis in law for those claims.

Jimmy Crawford is also correct in saying that the referendum vote is not binding on the Government, although it's hard to see how they could simply turn round and say they are going to ignore it.  What is potential more of an issue is that over 70% of MPs are in favour of staying in the EU and they could vote down the bill to come out.  Now that could make for an 'interesting' situation.

I don't see how anyone could have a problem with that. After all, we had this vote due to the EU being "undemocratic", therefore if our democratically elected representatives decide to vote down a bill to leave the EU, that's the democracy we wanted in action.  image

In this area the out vote was between 60 and 70%.

I wouldn't think there is much chance of an MP being reelected if he/she totally ignores the wishes of their electorate.  I think they are waking up to the fact of who they are supposed to represent.

  • Why not? How often does an elected MP actually consult his/her constituents before voting in Parliament?

I agree they are supposed to represent constituents, but in practice they vote the way they want or are whipped to vote.

Well my local MP was waffling on the ITV news just now about what's going to happen next.  He's a leave supporter, elected at the last election so hardly at the top table.  All the others have disappeared though.

My late Mother said never speak about sex, religion, money or politics, I can now see why, the pound had recovered the following day.  A friend of mine made a lot of money on a bet, I thought the stay in would win.  Talking to folk, its not all imigration, they are unhappy that Brussells rules the size shape of bananas, power of hairdryers, vacuum cleaners, what light bulbs you are allowed to buy.  Human rights, well in this country murders, rapists, site their human rights, what about the rights of their victims.  Am surpsirsed Davi Cameron bailed out.

I hear there's a missing person appeal out for some bloke called George Osborne.  Apparently he has been missing now for nearly 48 hours image
