I have to say that I haven't noticed anything too extreme in the comments in this thread.  Some posts have been made while people are still feeling shocked/emotional/euphoric (choose as appropriate) following the vote.  The simple reality is that we are where we are, and we need to look to how to make the best of it.

What I have noticed over the past few years (not on this forum), is that many people do seem to be much less tolerant of those who have a different opinion.  'Rent-a-mob' ready to howl down anybody who dares to question their view of what is right.

Rent a Mob KT53??? Half the posters on here would fall over if they tried waving their walking canes (frames) at any one in anger, we grew up in an era when most of the food we ate came out of the garden, we have seen it all. General De Gaule tried to keep us out we should have listened, we dipped our toes into the Euro and got our fingers burnt. Many good things came out of us being members though many frustrations at the same time, it was always a love hate relationship now we are out, we think! Two or more years from now we will all be asking what happened, we thought we had left, this will take some time to unravel and in that time Governments both here and in Europe will have changed  including the Brussels lot. It will be fun to watch the shenanigans as our and their politicians squirm trying to wriggle out of it. Meanwhile we will all be taking holidays on Russia's Black sea resorts, been there quite good, Spain Italy France will be begging us to return and we as true Brits will give the usual two finger Victory sign, we are an obstreperous lot after all. Misery this may be to some others are now wondering what they did, me, I am now looking forward to what will happen in this country now politics have changed forever.

  • The ridiculous Government petition has now passed 3 million, and is still shooting up at a phenomenal rate. I don't think there is a snowball in hell's chance of the Government bringing in a retroactive law like this. It is not going to be best of three!

Its embarrassing that people living in a democracy, don't appear to understand how it works!

It amuses me that on a popular political notice board, several "remainers"  were bangin' on last week at the "outers" that in the event of a close win by the remainers, they shouldn't think for one minute there'd be a second referendum. Those same people are now calling for one!

We've so many bad losers amongst some younger people.

I guess they had parents who never said "no" to them. I'm aware of two otherwise sensible people in their twenties and thirties, who voted "remain," as they were worried about roaming charges and the cost of future continental holidays.

Wer'e out and we will never return to any European non-elected organisation that wishes to interfere with every aspect of our lives and expect us to pay through the nose for it.

The EU now is nothing like the one for which we signed up in 1975.

Already things are returning to normal on the economic front. The EU has got a bloody nose and will have to change its tune.

They want us to go quickly, (that's how shocked they are, it's "dummy out of the pram" time for them) and they don't want other members to realise what an invasive organisation the EU has become and that a major partner in this profligate organisation with two head offices and over 10,000 pen-pushers on more money and lavish expenses than our Prime Minister, has had the courage to say, "enough's enough."

    There!

And I didn't once mention immigration, (well not 'til now!)

I comment because I am British but wasn't allowed to vote.   Other ex-pats will be in a similar position and, to be frank, living outside the UK most probably gives us a view of the wider picture both in the UK and Europe and the rest of the world.

I happen to think the vast majority of the political classes, not just in the UK, are bozos who have lost touch with their electorate, do not understand what concerns they have and don't communicate well with their voters.   They are too short termist in their view and lack any vision beyond the next election day.

I do think everyone with a vote has a duty to vote wisely and not blindly - to inform themselves and consider the issues and not just vote the way their parents did or their union or their newspaper or their perceived class says they should.   It's important to think through the implications for everyone and not just oneself.

I believe people are stronger together, working to a peaceful and prosperous community with equal opportunity for all.  Brexit takes the UK in a different direction and may well lead to its being broken up.  Who then will pay to subsidise Wales and the poorer English regions where people can't or won't work to pay for themselves?   At the moment there is a huge discrepancy across the home nations and English regions between income per person and government expenditure per person.   Do you really think there won't be some fall out?   London is already thinking about special regional status within the EU.   Scotland and Northern ireland too.

There are no signs yet of leadership, no signs of joined up thinking, no signs of strategy for taking the UK forward to a bright future.  I hope some is forthcoming soon because whilst the British character is to bear up and triumph in the face of hardship and conflict from outside it doesn't work in a rudderless ship.

As for that bus there never were 350 billion and the politicos who said it could be saved and spent on the NHS are not actually in power so have no say in where taxes will come from or be spent.

I did specifically state that I wasn't referring to people on this board when referring to Rent-a-Mob.  It was a comment on the reactions of a vocal minority when they don't get their own way.  It has nothing to do with political, religious or any other partisan belief, purely an unwillingness to listen to an opposing view.

I unashamedly voted remain, and still think we might well live to regret leaving. Hey ho. I'm a democrat and I'm happy to conceed that more disagreed than agreed with my point of view.

I have to say working in Waitrose this morning with folk commenting on the front pages of the papers ( some happy, some miserable ) has been, erm. "trying"

I've been doing my " I'm at work, and as such I have to remain neutral" bit. Not like me to have to bite my tongue.

Replying to KT53 "waving canes and things" was very much tongue in cheek style, having been on quite a few boards in the last 16 years this GW  board appeared to be a gentler area to dabble in and I would put that down to an older section of the population, calm in thought, slow to rile, though once started do not stand in front of them.

Yes indeed I remember the 1940's and the way people reacted. When the Church Bells rang one night the signal for invasion which we all thought was coming mother dashed into the Stables and brought out two pitch forks, "right you German B####### come on then and see what you get" Dad and I were trying to drag her into the shelter she would have none of it, she was prepared to go down fighting as where most of us at the time.

The people are not fools they saw though the rhetoric, laughed at the outright lies and none existent facts stated, then Voted. We older folk have seen it all, a new government elected do not look to the future they do as much for themselves and Party as they can get away with for three years then spend two years trying to win the next election. Must have seen it at least 16-17 times three years attack your pocket then two years of let go the purse strings. It has come home at last and stuck one of Mothers hay forks right up their tender bits, get out of that I say although we the common herd will be the ones who suffer.

I'm having wonderful images of your mother and her pitchfork.  We could do with a few more like that around these days, although no doubt the pitchfork would be banned on 'elf n safety groundsimage

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we had politicians who would give a balanced view of things?  Instead we have people like Sajid Javid (politicians of other flavours are available) on Andrew Marr today, effectively trying to disown everything he said prior to the referendum.  Now we can overcome all the problems which, less than a week ago, he was saying would mean the end of the world as we know it.

Had the Remain side said from the start that 'the worst case scenario is X,Y,Z but we can work to mitigate that.  Despite that we still believe that the UK would be better in than out' I firmly believe they would have had far more support.
