Scroggin , try and go to a local show you may be pleasantly surprised , that's what we did and thought some of ours are just as good as those on display , obviously not the County or National shows , we are definaetly not in that league and quite frankly would not want to put in that sort of time
It is nice taking part , the Veg judge always stays and is happy for you to aso him questions
GWRS that is Brilliant well done to you and OH sound as though judges liked the bits you enter, good that the judge stay, they don't at the show I go to
The judge has been around the plot last weekend and looked at the ones that were entered for best plot - not mine
The big shows the veg in them I have seen in pictures in mags are huge
Been to the allotment today - heat wave going on here, havested lots of peas some strawberries bit of lettuce, kale and lots of pink sweetpeas
Chopped down the potato stems cause of blight and where we did not get round to earthing up the coloured potatoes some were on top of soil so dug and earthed them up now as don't want to lift them yet, also done some weeding and watering
Some of my newly planted potatoes have started to poke though the soil
After entering the local show I didn't put anything in...... it was always going to be a case of showing what was ready and finding time to harvest it. The show also clashed with friends staying, who can only come down during the Scottish school holidays.
The weather in the NW couldn't have been better here this year. Radish, beetroot, swede and lettuce sown or planted out a couple of weeks ago is beginning to romp away. Dahlias, dwarf sunflowers, sweet pea and gladioli are all beginning to flower. Cosmos has been in flower for a few weeks.
There's been a lot going on at home and so I haven't had time to harvest stuff. I've been so lucky berries and currants haven't been eaten by birds. Harvested the first toms, cues and chillies.
Gosh, I'm offline for a few days and so many things happen! Congratulations, GWRS!
Something has been digging up and eating my potatoes - rats, probably. I harvested a few strawberries from the plants I planted this spring and raspberries from the bushes I inherited. I had to stake sunflowers with tree stakes, because the bamboo canes weren't strong enough. The sweet peas began to flower, they're lovely. My favourite is Beaujolais, dark velvety purple with a wonderful scent.
I was a bit disappointed with my potatoes, they are healthy enough but they aren't waxy - I chose waxy varieties but when I cooked some yesterday they were crumbling. Perhaps there's some trick to cooking them? (I didn't overcook them.)
I had my first full meal from stuff I've grown! Considering the time and money I've invested into the allotment it must have been the most expensive dinner I've ever had, but I enjoyed every bite.

Went to water and picked some toms and lettuce.
Sweetcorn must have grown a ft during last couple of days, it 's been so hot... we've had rain during the night which has been a welcome relief.
Happy growing everyone...
