Rosemummy - how about building a sort of playpen on part of the site so he can't get out?   Maybe (or maybe in another year or two?) he could have his own bit in there to grow?

visited another site today with many more flat plots, also it's a more open site, even a minute nearer! so am going to phone and swap lists, both have about 15 on the list, i did think of a playpen, but now he's just at the age when he wouldn't tolerate  that for more than a few munutes now though!

Hi, rosemummy, you could put your name on several lists and see which comes up first. I put my name on the list of 4 or 5 sites. Some lists go down very quickly. We didn't have a waiting list a few weeks ago and needed to advertise in the local paper, it's now gone up again.

The working party day went well on Saturday. Lot's done and it was an opportunity to meet new plot holders.

giagibbs, what a pity about the additional land. Perhaps someone else will give their plot up soon.

rosemummy, good luck with getting a nice plot.

gardengirl, I wish more people grew flowers along their veg.

There were lots of people on the site on Sunday, a good half of them clearly friends of various plot holders plus their children. The children were running around, squealing happily, and their mothers kept yelling at them to "behave themselves". Sad, really. I'm no fan of noisy children, but the whole point of being outside as a child is to run around and make noise! Poor kids, I bet their mothers watch TV the whole day instead of playing with them.

Planted purple sage, lemon balm, caraway, echinacea and some shallots and garlic. Quite a few of the seeds I sowed a week ago indoors have germinated, too. And my plum and apricot trees have several blossoms each. This is getting very exciting!

I discovered ants in both compost bins, so I've now watered them hoping the ants will move on.

Aster2, good to hear a lot of your seeds have germinated. I sowed alot in the GH which germinated, I've left the propagator covers on in the hope more come through and to keep the compost moist till I can go again at the weekend.

Was going g to start harde ing off an early pea varety this week.

Planted out 1st and 2nd early spuds at the weekend along with shallots.

Zoomer44, I haven't dared to plant my potatoes, but I'm thinking of doing it this weekend.

I was some what pessimistic about planting out spuds but quite alot on the allotment have. The guy on the neighbouring plot planted out a couple of weeks ago.

He advised to plant them deep and be prepared to earth up if frost is forecast. A surface frost shouldn't kill them.

I've edged my bets by keeping main crop back though, a blight resistant variety.

I'm only going to grow one maincrop variety (Pink Fir Apple), the rest are first and second earlies. I'll keep the maincrop till the end of April.

I've Sarpo Mira as a main crop, think I'll wait a few more weeks to plant those out.
