  • Bristol had some rain through the night and there is still a little drizzle but the forecast is for some sunny spells so should get some bulb planting done in the borders now the rain has softened the soil a little.  I am afraid there is more unsettled weather coming next week with more wind because of storms coming across the Atlantic.  Hopefully most of it will be during the night.  i should get the last of the conservatory windows filled up with tender plants today and perhaps start on the central table.  then there is the task of scrubbing the tiles on the floor and bringing in the floor standing large plants.  Still I am up to speed with that task and all should be protected before the frost comes.

  • Very heavy shower has just finished so rainbutts looking good now.  Sun appearing though now.

Trentham gardens has a long border full of David Austin roses. I was sticking my nose into all of them to see which had the best scent. I think Gertrude Jekyll is one of my favourites, a real old fashioned rose scent.  Lady Hamilton I smelt at Barnsdale, an orange one with a sort of citrus smell. I liked it but it wasn't what I call a rose scent. I had a free sample of a new Molton Brown rose bubble bath last week. I have been bathing in Rose scent all week.

All of the  insects in the garden are on the ivy at the moment. They seem to have deserted everything else. Even stuff like Linaria which usually has bees on it, has been abandoned.

I planted some Nicotiana sylvestris in a shady spot, they are flowering well. I hoped to have moths on them, but when I go out with a torch, there is nothing there.

A bright morning after a vile day yesterday.

Marion, I hope you get some help with moving large pots into your conservatory.

My daughter's neighbour helps to move her lemon tree inside for the winter. It's her 50th birthday today so I'm feeling old. . . . . .

It's now a case of making the most of any good weather to get on with cutting back/overwintering etc etc.

  • Yes Joyce I line all the heavy pots in a sheltered position by the bungalow wall till one of my sons visits, then in they come.  The conservatory has two steps up to it and the other way through the house would be too messy.

  • Taraah!  Last windowsills packed with tender plants in the conservatory.  Just a few labels to be soaked and scraped off the reused pots when I have a minute and the conservatory is on its way to being shipshape and Bristol fashion for the winter.
