Lorna95Lorna95 Posts: 436

Could someone advise me on how to grow a daylily, I've been given six seeds and as there isn't many I want the best chance for them to germinate, I have never grown these before and no nothing on getting them germinated. If someone could please advise me on what to do and when to do it that would be great.

Thank you.xx

I'd wait till next year to sow them now Lorna I find the best way is to sow them February-March in zip lock bags containing slightly damp vermiculite, only slightly damp or they'll rot, place the bag in the bottom of the fridge and wait they can take 6-12 weeks to germinate, keep checking on them you'll see the white roots first wait till the root gets to an inch or so then bring out of the fridge and put bag on a bright windowsill a green shoot will appear in a few days  you can then open the bag an add a bit more water pot up when the shoots a couple of inches, by the time they re a good size weather should be warmer so the pots will be OK to go outside.

Beware though it can become addictive I have half an allotment full of seedlingsimage

Thanks for the info Kathy 6, Do you use just normal tap water of somethink else.

This is a great bit of info, I got a allotment in June, it was just  to grow veg, but now I've just got another plot for a polytunnel for flowers and Veg, it is so addictive especially now I'm growing from seeds.

Thanks for the info Kathy it had been helpful.

I have laboured under the delusion that I have Day Lilies for many years now. If what I have is indeed Hemerocallis (and I really am guessing) then you will need to watch your new plants Lorna95 and make sure they do not take over their bed.

Mine are thugs and, despite neglect, poor soil, serious woman handling and severe chopping about they continue to thrive as long as they have sun. They have finished flowering now and are dying down but maybe I will post a picture next Summer and get a professional opinion about their pedigree.

In the meantime I really hope you have success with your seeds as there is nothing like that first green shoot poking through to make it all worthwhile. I would just say that if only one survives you can have a massive border in a few years just from the one plant, so don't panic.

  • I just love day lilies.  Others don't seem to share my view - often saying that there aren't enough flowers for the leaves, get too big etc but I seem to really have a thing for them.  I created a new border recently with the intention of usining heleniums and the like with a few grasses and it "accidently" got filled with day lilies.  (There was this offer...) Whoops! Good luck with the seeds Lorna.

Yes just normal tap water Lorna, forgot to say protect your seedlings from slugs as they love the new foliage, they will take 2-3 years to flower in the UK, I have a friend in the Azores who has them flowering within a year, lucky man, do you know what the cross is?

Its true herbaceous the species daylilies such as Fulva and Kwanso can be thugs, sending runners up to 3ft away from the parent but there are so many gorgeous daylilies out there now, over 60,000 registered varieties last time I checked, yes not all available in the UK but there are some great specialist growers out there Polliesdaylilies, theflowerbower to name a couple I use, they will advise you the best varieties for you space, there are now the tiniest minis to the largest spiders, i have one 14inch across!, doubles, fancy eyes, teeth and now there are even ones with beards along the centre of the petals I'd love to get my hands on one of those lol.

Me too Spernoodle 190+ named varities at last count oops, and that doesn't include the seedlings, love to see some pictures of yours.

I'm new on here but when i figure out how to add pictures I'll add some of mine
