My cut flower bed is now a mess as I haven't had time to deal with it. Also in July with temperatures in the 30s and being away 2 weeks with a non-gardener house sitter it suffered badly.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

It's been really good for picking plants for the borders in terms of heights and seeing what flowers at what time.

In a local shop that sells all lovely interior things they have this year started to sell hano tied bouquets of garden flowers, they are simply wrapped in brown paper and look gorgeous And should do for twenty pounds!!!!

Gladioli are three tied back to back with raffia, then dahlias around the base. This colour will be over by october, but I hope I will have buddy which is yellow, also coral ruffles.  The dahlias may get changed for chrysanths or cosmos.   Experimenting, if I put the gladioli in as soon as the first floret is starting to open, they look their best about 4 days later.

  • Wonder if anyone has tips for sweet peas. Have been cutting them for vases for weeks. They smell the wonderful, then the next day the scent seems to vanish image ??

There's something lovely home grown bouquets on here though, much nicer than getting a bunch of plastic wrapped flowers from the supermarket x

I have cut Verbena bonariensis for a vase. To prolong the life, I read that you have to dip the ends in boiling water for a few seconds. Air in the stem bubbles out.

My sister also does this with roses. Are there any other flowers that need this treatment.?

I am trying various flowers to see how long they last. The yellow blobs are tansy flowers. I am also trying sedum flower stems.
