oh you all sound like you are getting on brill! I haven't even had time to make the bed yet! Your combinations sound beautiful and you are certainly inspiring me
i also am discovering in my new garden that the lawn is very very muddy so hoping to make gravel path and have cottage garden plants in this area
are your cutting beds all raised? I am hoping that mine shall be, mostly so my Beau can not get in it! Would you say scaffold planks the best to use?
Beaus Mum I have one really small bed made from odd bits of wood around, one area which is long and thin ground bit and have used gravel boards which are normally at bottom of fences - 2 planks high so makes it 30cm high for the 1metre bed which are not that expensive
scaffold planks are good to use, I have some of the veg beds with them last a few years - good to paint the wood to treat it so does not rot too quick, I will need to replace mine soon one plank bowed from the soil in it
I haven't started any clearing or seed sowing for that area yet still planning
I'm hoping to have a cutting garden this year. I was inspired by Rachel de Tame on GW last year and as I don't want to grow so many veg this year thought I would give it a go.
I have bought some seeds, Larkspur and various others, thought I might grow some Dahlias, sweet peas, and tithonia, just have to waite and see what happens.
I have got various things I can use already in the garden that have self seeded, so good luck everyone.
Can't really offer any advice as I have never done it myself, I will just follow instructions on the seed packets, and when I bought some Johnsons seeds there was a small leaflet that gave some tips, so you might be able to pick one of those up from the GC.
I am having a cutting garden this year as daughter has asked me to grow her wedding flowers. This year is a practice run, both for getting them in flower for the end of July and for her to decide if there is anything she doesn't like.
I am using a raised bed ( usually for veg) 8ft x 4 ft and other areas of the garden. Also going to use containers eg instead of begonias in the front it will be sunflowers!
Not the traditional wedding type flowers or colours at all
So far sown are Bishops Children dahlias, Ammi vignas, Panicum, 3 different sorts of Cosmos, Larkspur (confetti), scented white cornflower, Sweet peas (next year will be dark coloured ones) Nicotiana (green and purple), Amaranthus spike
Still to sow are 2 sorts of rudbeckia, sunflowers (managed to find a variety that is pollen free so doesn't stain dress).zinnias (green and coloured)
And ordered as plugs are Brompton Stock, osteopurnum and something else can't remember!!
Had some heated propagators fro Chritmas and am finding them brilliant.
A practice run?! Bah! I'm growing my own wedding flowers and figuring I'll be able to blag it as long as quantities are good. Wedding isn't til august 28th so I've not started much off yet. Got 2 heated propagators but not much space in the greenhouse yet! soil is nicely prepared for direct sowing too. My dahlia tubers are being stubborn so I think they need to go in the propagator too.
Haha! I have a theme of sorts, have just chosen plenty of perennials, shrubs, roses and easy to grow annuals which match. We got engaged 22.12.14 and had everything planned and booked (included dresses etc) within a few weeks. No stress!
I've got my first batch of seeds germinated in the heated propagator all potted up to grow on. Put second lot of seeds in the heated propogator yesterday. Can't wait til it's warm enough to plant outside.
Ah yes we did the same, been in our place a year. Last year was me becoming more and more obsessed with the garden, fortunately the other half likes it too.
Great stuff Tootles, I have pom pom dahlias and cosmos purity germinated so far. Plus canna lillies but they aren't for the cut flower beds.
