Having a go at a cut flower patch...
Hello
Oooh happy days! Finished work early today and it's Friday!! Yahoo!
Im going to have a go at a cut flower patch or two this year. Am giving up two raised beds of 1m2 that I normally use for spuds and other veg.
Inspired by Gardeners World (Rachel DT I think) who showed one last year.
Is anyone else having a go? Anyone done this themselves who can offer any tips?
Thanks muchly.

Im kind of doing the same thing, im growing things for drying, statice, poppy heads, nigella etc.
Ive tried the cut flower thing before with varying success, im a monkey for growing things to close together, really not a good idea as its hard to weed and they often compete so much with each other, the flowers arent so good, also, im more a veg grower, so i keep my soil on the rich side, not always good for flowers, but it really does depend what you want to grow, cosmos seems to be almost fail proof as does nicotiana
nerines, agapanthus, lillies, dahlias are all really reliable, do you want to just start with annuals for this year?
I had great success with sweet williams and sweet peas last year. They provided a lot of cut flowers between them.
Me too Becky. I always cram things in and then regret it later!
Ive bought all sorts. Larkspur, zinnias, scabiosa, verbena, echinops, orlays, alyssum, dahlia, didiscus, antirrhinum, cosmos, Iberis, sweet peas and acrodinium.... I'm going to plant where my spuds were last year as the spuds weren't very good because I grew them two years on the trot in the same bed.
I just love the idea of fresh flowers from the garden in the house without stripping the beds at the front of the house.
I'm in. ill probably start with the free zinnia seeds in next month gardeners world! I've got some dahlia plans as well and always grow sunflowers. This year I think I'll try several different types.
Photos due mid summer!
Hi Tootles
I hope to do very same this year so looking forward to all the replies you get on this thread
There was a thread last year on same which was good, I'll see if I can find and bump but if not looks like you are getting some good ideas already
Hope you keep us posted with your plans
Oooh blue, beaus...brilliant! Let's do it. Very exciting! Would love to share pictures as we go on. Are you in ommthree?
Ommthree?
Surely. But my patch will be very, very small! Just sweet peas, sweet williams and maybe some asters.
Yay! Roll on sunshine!
Hope others will join us.
Yep I'm doing the same. i tried last year in an area of the garden that was overgrown with nettles. did okay with lillies and gladioli and sweet peas but the nettles were persistent little rascals. Had a bit of a redesign and am moving the cutting garden to another area of the garden. Still overgrown and has to be reclaimed from nature but a bit more manageable. looks like a lovely day for gardening .. at least in Suffolk.
