  • I am going on holiday for two weeks at the start of June, and I want my sweet peas not to be flowering when I am away as no one will be able to cut them, so question is when is the best time to sow the seeds so they do not flower until mid june?

  • Sow them now and they'll not flower untill July.

  • Question is dwarf sweet peas the same as hanging basket sweet peas?  so I can use them in a basket

    Thanks

hi david, i only have a smaller basket, i can keep in cool g'house, is it then worth me jist trying to sow theses dwarf/trailing direct when i sow normal ones in pots? osr sow all in pots and remember to label!!!

Well, not something I've tried, rosemummy, but see no reason why it wouldn't work. Perhaps be able to hang them outside, once they start to germinate.

Remember to sow those sold specifically for hanging baskets though,,,,..there are lots of different types (patio sps) and so on, out there.

Nice to see you around these threads, btw. image

  • Thanks David, I was planning on sowing them yesterday but was holding off as was not too sure about flowering time.  Hopefully they will do better than last year, they did not seem to like the hot and dry weather

  • John - just to say that as with most things in the garden, we are at the mercy of the weather. Given favourable conditions they may be flowering at the end of June.

Hi all, thanks David, i went to b & q yesterday and couldn't get trailing seeds but got 2 little pots of trailing seedlings for £2 so put them in a basket when I gort home, they were outside at the store so I presumed they'd be ok left out, they're in a quite sheltered spot so fingers crossed, I did have a tiny disaster.. my box full of seed packets ( alphabetically arranged) ...was rattling, I discovered it was full of loose sp seeds that had fallen out of 2 packs that weren't properly closed!! so i have a bit of a lucky dip! sowed about 40 seeds yesterday ( can you tell I had babysitters for the afternoon?) and they're in the dining room til they germinate then I'll pop outside in plastic storage boxes with lids on at night for a couple of weeks, fingers crossed I'll have front and back gardehs.. and hanging baskets.. full of sweet peas this year!

  • Good luck, rosemummy.....In my own SP baskets, I have to say that I have no experience of growing anything other than those specifically sold  for hanging baskets.
