Hi Stagbeetle, how is your Verbena Bonariensis doing, I have had some in a seed tray for what seems like weeks, still no sign of germination (, must be a slow starter!)
Stagbeetle great pic, nice lot of flowers you have been sowing, good green house remember to hold your GH down with bricks on bottom shelf or compost as can be prone to blowing over
Not started my Verbena B yet - it does take a while to germinate
Want to put up my GH this week as seed trays are building up indoors and want to sow more but can't till I get more space
It's gonna be a busy allotment day tomorrow- I'm having to go to both plots! I need to get digging at both plots, and figure out how I'm going to warm the soil up for the first lot of potatoes- will plastic tunnel cloches be ok for that? I put some manure down on that particular bed a couple of months ago, so I want to give it a turn over and raking before covering it up, just to make sure. Or would I be ok to get the spuds in now? My earlies have been chitting away quite nicely for the last six weeks
At the chicken site, I have finally figured out where to get the potatoes in, but I have done absolutely zero digging on that side, so if I want to get growing in that space, I need to get a wriggle on!
I can't believe how much of a noob I feel about allotmenting today
It's tempting to get stuff in the ground, but too early for spuds. The RHS website says it's OK to plant onion sets, shallots and garlic now, a part from garlic I'm going to wait till April, less chance of losing stuff to a late frost .
Been going through my seeds to see which can be sown now, because I'm in the NW I sow stuff a month later than what it says on the packet. I've leeks and celeriac which can be sown from February onwards and then nearly everything can be sown from March onwards, you'd need a windowledge the length of a football pitch will need to be selective...
Your polly tunnel sounds mint Ginagibbs...ever so envious...
Robinsons is a no frills nursery and anyone travelling miles must be a tad bit disappointed when they get there but they are ever so good with advise. Amongst other stuff they grow lots of different chilli varieties and their onions are second to none. They had a spud fair in February with over 40 different varieties. If anyone wants to visit I can give post codes for other GC and local nurseries worthy of a visit
I've only just done the verbena Ginagibbs but didn't realise that it can take awhile to germinate. The cowslip says 4wks indoors then 4wks in the fridge to help it germinate, so have had to write down when it was started and when it needs to go in the fridge, hope the kids don't disturb though.
Will weigh the greenhouse down Gardengirl, is it too early to put it out with seedlings in it?
Stagbeetle when I get the greenhouse up this week after a bit of an area clearing, seedlings will be going in, I would say fine for seedlings to go in it as long as you keep it zipped up - they will take a little longer to germinate as not as warm as indoors - unless they have already I normally put up in March
I know the feeling Stagbeetle, my dining table and kitchen floor are piled up with propagators! !I have risked putting some of my seedlings in my unheated greenhouse and not lost any yet (it is bubble wrap insulated) Wont risk the tomatoes yet though.
Thanks for the tip re. spuds, they are starting to chit now they are in a warm room I plan to put them in deep pots in the poly tunnel when they are ready.
I have been trying to warm up the soil by laying big sheets of black polythene over for the past few months. I have such cold wet clay so not in a hurry to plant just yet.
I have covered what I needed to cover at one site and forked over about three quarters of the new potato bed at chickenville- I had to call it a day earlier than planned because I was hungry and needed the loo I will go and get the rest done before the rain starts tomorrow.
While I was there, I watched a peregrine falcon circling over the site looking for its lunch. Such a graceful thing to see

In my defence, it is my first full season...
Fruitcake not sure it would be warm enough for the spuds to be planted to start growing the cloche may help
found this website about warming soil http://www.growveg.com/growblogpost.aspx?id=337
