Thanks you guys. I think we are back on the main grid here so have electric but some parts of town don't or it keeps going down and there have been burst water pipes closing the roads. Would you beleive this - a temp generator was stolen, I thought it a tab bit odd there were police cars at some of the substations.

My thoughts are with those more seriously effected in Cumbria .

In this part of Lancashire and closer to home - St Micheals has been evacuated and accommodation offered at the YMCA for families not able to stay with friends/family.

Phones lines although down during power cuts do leave messages and last number redials - so have been in contact with freinds and family when the power is on imagecan't understand why mobiles don't work though when the power is off.

Went to the plot today. Other plot holder's had also ventured out. Picked some kale and Leek's. Had a general tidy, took down one of the bean supports and began to repair the fence.

The water butts were all nearly full and nothing had blown away.

Bought some bulbs and a smoke generator for the GH.

Only just been on site , Zoomer , sorry to hear of your problems , as you say some have had it so much worse and with Chritsmas just around corner , just makes it horrible  image

been up to plot this morning for a couple of hours , winds damaged fencing , may have to wait for next year as rather busy at moment

hope you are all well , still lots to do at the plot , in fact a pleasant morning , cold , watery sun shine but no icy wind image

  • Went to the allotment today as well nice weather done some more digging, only got one fork now as have to see if I can straighten out the other

The allotment shop is getting a re-fit while it is shut

Seems like all allotment holders will be putting in nomination for a site rep not wanting to do that myself, but there maybe a vote to see who we want as site rep eventually - as have 2 on the site I know one of them but other one never seen

  • Hi went to the allotment plot today to drop of some more cardboard and got soaked with hailstones as well as rain also got one pallet which took apart

Went on a pallet hunt trip and found that the normal place in the industrial estate has a massive dug hole with barriers up a digger there - hole right around the pallet pile must be digging down for the pipes as they were all showing so could not get to the pallets there

Still had a rummage in there rubbish skip bin and got some fake grass quite a bit and I know that cost a bit to buy about 50cm wide will use somewhere, some plastic to cover bits and some cardboard,  a pallet from a different place so goodies in that bin

  • Hello,

hope all is fine now Zoomer and Jo47.

Welcome back GWRS, did you have a nice time?

Ive been to the allotment a few times now and have been digging over a large area of it. I've been spending last night planning the plot rotations and what I would like to grow at the plot and at home.

What tools do you recommend? I've got spade, forks, hoe and trowel. I need to get a thingy bob to take pallets apart as I have to make a fence for home, also what are the weed tools like?

Garedengirl- I was going to go tomorrow until I saw the amount of rain come down but will hopefully get there today to put bits in the compost bin and check on it.

  • Only just catching up but Zoomer and Jo I hope things are improving for you both image

  • GWRS good idea a green roof not going for that though - going to have clear plastic sheeting for the roof

Stagbeetle I have a hand double hoe and a hand cultivator - this one in link below very comfortable handle and do really good at removing the weeds   http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/qualcast-cultivator---carbon-steel-950534

Do want to get a long handle cultivator did see one at In-excess but not the last time we went

The weather was terrible today very windy and wet
