Great pics Fruitcake. V.sad about the lady and baby, you must be right near the bridge?
Did a bit at the allotment yesterday, added some more muck to the beds and staked my broad beans.
Could'nt do too much, as the horse I ride did his bucking bronco impersonation and put my hip and back out a bit. Luckily I did'nt come off, but a hot bath was very necessary last night
Been making a folder of ideas for what I would like for the allotment when I get it and a tick sheet for when I get to the viewing stage of what is on the plot like shed and bits
Gg - Some permanent planting is always a good idea to have on the allotment like rubarb, strawberries, fruit bushes - I've got currant(red, white and black) and gooseberry, some perennial herbs - these are all low maintance if weeded around and given a good mulch in the autumn. Herbs can be planted fairly close together and planted like this keep down weeds, most attract bee's and other good guys .
Rashberries (the roots on these can be a tad bit invasive though).
If you like chad the plants will last up to 4yrs depending on where you live and weather over winter. I also planted some globe artichokes this year and am hoping they over winter.
If it's a big plot the permanent planting fills space, usually gives a crop every year and is low maintance.
Zoomer agree with you whole heartily about permanent planting. Life is so much easier when you have some beds permanently full and that leave you more time to spend on the rest of the plot.
I had inherited a currents bed/gooseberries and now have a strawberry, asparagus, rhubarb, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and cranberries, and a mini orchard! Do we like fruit? yes yes yes. Amongst this lot I have planted garlic and onions.
Did plant winter veg which didn't do well except for leeks which nobody wants to eat!
So not a lot to do on the plot now which gives me time to potter about in the garden.
Hello Gg I'm in Surrey. I have half plot but in reality it's more like a three quarter which I've had for 18mths and recently have acquired a quarter which is next to mine.
How about yourself? Are you about to get one? Having an allotment is simply fab I love gardening although I'm relative new but like you always looking for books.
Just subscribed to 'grow your own mag' as gardeners world mag isn't enough for me now.
Hello Weyplotter I am in Southampton waiting for a plot at Weston allotments, on council website says 3 month waiting list so not too long to wait now
I subscribe to GW mag and to Garden news which is weekly and gives away a lot of seeds most weeks more in spring and summer mostly flowers this year and a few veg
