New to allotments, complete novice never grown a thing in my life.Large 4 section three sections covered with tarp. One covered with bindweed and dandilions now sorted, dug, weeded (I hope) manured.Opened second section Saturday closed again Monday full of old potatoes most eaten from the inside.Lots of what  I think are wireworm .Little golden wrigglies. Any advice gratefully recieved.

  • Don't grow potatoes there again.

  • Hello and welcome Roy what sort of things are you wanting to grow?

Try and see if you can get any well rotted horse manure for your plot that will help improve the soil where needed, well sounds as though you are making a good start getting rid of the weeds, where about are you?

I was reading this interesting http://www.allotment-garden.org/allotment/new-allotment.php

and been watching more of Katie's allotment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7rklH3oNI8

Ginagibbs good one yes those sunflowers are brill keeping all the slug away (not they get eaten to quick before they get good tuff stems and roots)

The way I like to grow these is in tins that had food in the ring pull type, then use the tin opener to open the bottom and keep that bit in the tin - needs to lean on the bit that had the ring pull lid and gives you drainage and when ready to plant out push the bottom of the tin straight up and your plant pops out  - if you get that

GWRS great you got to spend the day up the allotment and what a harvest you have

Gardengirl , interseting use of tins , must remember that for the future

I tend to use tiolet  roll tubes a lot , bean , peas ect image

Roy need to get rid of those potatoes and wireworms as you seem to have alot

If you are looking for plants , depending on soil and where in the country you are you could put in winter cabbage plants but they will need protecting and I put a bit of lime in the soil for them

Also winter onions and garlic can still go in

When I got an allottment got a couple of books , always make an easy Christmas present one on Allottments generally and another what to do month by month

Have a look around the site to see what others are growing and if your lot are as friendly as mine just ask people for advise image

    Happy allottmenteering

  • Can I be nosy and ask people when you got the call and invited to look at your plot did you walk around them or just look from the edge of your possible plot?

Just a Q for when I get to that stage

I not only walked on it , I pulled a few weeds up and even took a spade !

Have a good poke around image

  • GG Had a good walk around (or should I say wade, as the grass was knee high!) I would advise taking a spade or fork like GWRS so you can see what the soil is like!!

  • Great idea you two never would of thought of taking a spade or fork,  it would more be a spade as fork here very bent

I will have a good nosy around when I get that far

Good half day at the allottment , got there at 12-00 , sun just breaking through mist , turned out to be a nice day

Hard frost last night but soil still soft , weeded spring onions and spinach and a few other bits

Created a new bed and path , still using the free bark chippings that we get delivered to the site image
