Hi Zoomer, did you get the other half plot? Also do they charge you the same price or do a special price for the 2. The reason I ask is that i pay £50 for my half plot which is the same as those with a full plot on our site.
I planted my one year old Blueberry plants into 70cm [28 inch] deep, square tubs - ericatious compost - last season and they are thriving. They will stay in these tubs for the rest of their lives. I have Patriot and Chandler and to me they both taste the same but Chandler are bigger fruit.
With Blueberries you must never let them dry out in the summer, watering only with rainwater to maintain acidic conditions. I give them a liquid feed in spring then another feed after fruiting - but do not leave the second feed to late in the year as the new growth must harden before cold weather sets in. I prune any long growth back by half as soon as the plant has fruited, also removing any untidy growth to keep the plant in shape. That is it. The plants look after themselves in the winter and have plenty of sun in the Summer.
For my triple plot with two sheds, a poly tunnel, water and hose I pay £40 per year. We have half plots, called "Community" plots with shared sheds and tools for £6 per year. The Committee, of which I am one, are pretty hot on insisting that the plots are kept in good order but will offer help to those with problems. There are short waiting lists most of the time but for some reason we have six "Community" plots available at the moment. No doubt these will be taken soon.
Wow Mel M you've got a good deal. I have to pay £10 for my shed on top of the £50 rent. My neighbours on 2 sides seem to have lost interest, and as I would like a bit more space I was thinking of asking but I dont want to pay £100 a year!!
That's a cheek Ginagibbs they should let you pay half the price of a full plot, - thought they would measure how many metres on the plot and calculate it that way
GWRS Have I made you interested in the Cape Gooseberries look good don't they
It is exceptional good value. We don't charge for sheds but poly tunnels are £5, hose £8 and full single plots £9. It isn't a 'pretty-pretty' allotment, all the fences being made of what people can get hold of etc but it is tidy and, as an inspector from Britain in Bloom stated recently, an 'Oasis of calm'. Which sums it up well.
Gardengirl. I live in Camborne, Cornwall but originally from the wilds of Birmingham. (Warks not USA)
GWRS. I forgot to mention that I have covered the top of the soil with chippings (pine is best) to retain moisture and ward off frost. If you live in a cold area you could wrap your pot/tubs in bubble wrap as well.
Mel M , looks like we have something in common I too am a true Brummie but now live in rural Lincolnshire
thanks for the info on blueberries and Cape Gooseberrys
costs we pay £50 for our plot which is 30 by 130 feet half plots cost £25 and membership of the allotment association is £3 and we have water on site and that costs £1 for a water tub or £3 for a water cube and they hold 1000 litres
we intend to spend Sunday and Monday there doing the fencing on the new half plot to stop the rabbits getting on it
We do not have rabbits on our site, in fact we do not have any real pests apart from rooks and sparrows, the sparrows in particular attacking young lettuce and chard plants - even if you are standing next to them!!! When there were chickens on the site we did have a problem with rats but keeping chickens is now discouraged.
