Hello all , scrogin , a week at the Lakes and it didn't rain !
Spent a day at allotment today , finished digging main crop potatoes , felt like hard work today , lots of horsetail to pull up at same time
Allottment committee got some chemical to kill the damned stuff so sprayed the last of it on part of my plot , they are getting some more , had to wear a respirator !
O/H checked onions to bring home , some going soft so will make onion marmalade , was brill last year
done in , had a couple of beers , bath waiting for dinner
must mention weather Brillant sunny day , Indian Summer perhaps ?
Lol - GWRS, we do get the occassional week when it doesn't rain here in the NW, not many but the rain it is good for flowers and veg .
I live 30 to 40 mins drive from Kendal/Windermere and have never tired from visiting the Lakes.
Did you visit any gardens scroggins - visited John Ruskins home earlier in the yr. Fab views of Coniston Water and Old Man Of Coniston.
Went with a cousin who has walked most of the Wainwright walks over a period of about 20yrs plus. Some of those can be quite scary, I've a fear of hieghtsand struggle when near to the top of peaks if the path is narrow, so walking the peaks in the Lakes isn't something I find enjoyable. Going up is easier than coming down but on my wish list of things to do is to go walking after the snow this yr with said cousin on a nice sedate walk.
Hi all, just back from a mini break in South Devon, glorious part of the country. Had my birthday there and a wedding to go to,so it was quite eventful.
Yesterday was stunning weather and I had not been to my plot for 6 days so it was looking in need of some TLC. harvested the remaining bush beans, loads of cherry toms and some squash. Ate the first of my sweetcorn cobs last night, wow what a difference, so sweet. Some of my kale had been decimated by catapillers so fed them to the chickens
Sown some cabbage and broccoli seeds, might be a bit late but if we get an indian summer they should grow ok.
Any one got any good recipies for celery, I have got masses of them!
Hi Gina. One of the things I do with celery, is to dry the tops ( in my dehydrating machine) so that I always that celery taste in winter for soups and stews.
Pat E , o/h , change of plan and made " onion chutney " instead
If you goggle onion marmalade you can get the recpie , that is what o/h does , does have a special recipe
you seem to use your dehydrating machine a lot , obviously useful
poped up to allottment this morning , left Sunday papers in shed , so put path clear on paths of shredded material , lit fire bin full of old rasberry canes and sprayed Swede covered in caterpillars
Ok, thanks GWRS. Yes, I dry all my herbs and all excess tomatoes and whatever takes my fancy. It's so much easier to store dry things in jam jars in a cupboard rather than in the freezer which is almost always full anyway.
Have achieved quite a lot today. Sorted through seeds and planted various seeds into propagator. Finished knitting the dog coat that someone ordered from the pet shop. I just need to sew it up and knit a matching scarf for the dog as well and then hopefully I can deliver it to the pet shop on Wednesday.
Think I'll head for bed soon, it's been a long day again. (11.25 pm).

GWRS can I have your recipe for Onion Marmalade please? Also, how long does it keep - is it like fruit preserves?

Hi Pat, I dont have a dehydrating machine, will have to look into getting one
Like the idea of a knitted dog coat and scarf, sounds really cute!
O/H has just made some Apple & Blackcurrant jam , one of my favourites
will also have to look into dehydrator ?
