Great, thanks Lesley.  Rained immediately before.  Rained immediately after.  But amazingly given forecast not alt all during the party!  With half hour to go before the party the organisers suggested calling it off.  but I didn't fancy telling the 3 year old!  So we went ahead and was fab!  Happy child.  Relieved parents.  Thanks dove for sacrificing your washing, and everyone for your well wishes.  I left a note on my other thread (who's favourite food is Fatsia japonica) but as title no longer related to the topic suspect it got lost!  I do seem to be very tangential on this forum!

Went round garden removing broken branches last night due to hailstones.  Gutted as leaves we're looking so healthy and now very scarred.  Dahlias in particular are in a very bad way. I've removed some leaves but didn't want to overdo it.  It's my first time growing them so don't really know anything about them.  Will the leave grow back? There's buds at the bit where the leaf joins the stalk ( what's that called?). Are they leaf buds?

Sideshoots? image   Think dahlias take quite well to a bit of pinching out image

Ah, pinching out.  Missed that bit! Well they're very busy anyway (or were!) maybe a bit of pinching now to encourage those side shoots.

Wow everyone is up now image

I'd love to take the credit for the raspberries Bekkie but they are Dove's.  This year I have been very kind to the birds visiting my garden and let them eat my fruit!!!!!

Thats very kind OL, they dont seem to be interested in mine, but that could be because the garden is full of sparrows! image

Mine suddenly is full of Thrushes and Blackbirds!!  I couldn't understand where the purple 'blobs' on the driveway and path were coming from......then realised that the blackcurrant bush that I thought hadn't produced any currants (I didn't see any flowers on it!!) had produced about a dozen, all for bird food image Fruit cage will be in place next year, in fact I think I'm moving my fruit to a separate patch altogether.

Well- at least you are helping our declining garden birds, i put dog food out for the hedgehog and foxes (dont start), the blackbirds, magpies etc just seem to go for that.

A fruit cage sounds like a good idea, is that what you are asking santa forimage
