Storm Ciaran

Has someone switched it off? 🤔

I am way down south in the Amber alert area.  There is not even the tiniest breeze at the moment.  Still as anything, sun's out, the sky a milky blue.  Yes, it was gusty overnight, but nothing unusually fierce.

How are others faring? ❤️

From the BBC news website it looks as if the Channel Islands are having a grim time  …

and the sea looks very rough on the Porthleven harbour webcam

Here in central norfolk it’s wet and blustery … we’re not really supposed to get it too badly, but after the recent flooding schools in Suffolk are closed. It won’t take much rain to cause more flooding … the ground is sodden …

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Pretty windy here, gusts of probably 110km/h, but that's nothing compared to Brittany where they have measured 207km/h. They are reporting on the French news that 1.2 million people are without power, due to trees on the lines and pylons ripped out, worse than '87 they say.

I'm sitting watching the trees nearby battling against the wind. We are over the road from a predominantly beech forest, the trees still with almost full leaf cover. About 1/2km away, the road goes through the forest proper. People are still driving through, they are insane.

Oddly, the dogs didn't want to stay out this morning, nor are they asking for a walk. I intend going nowhere!

I hope everyone else is ok,  <3 from me too.

Perfectly calm here but it's a sheltered wind direction for us for once. We still haven't had to fire up the heating this year either.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

We can hear the wind high in the trees, but are sheltered on the side of a hill. The next village is flooded and impassable, and several side roads blocked by fallen trees. A van got swept into the sea at Sidmouth last night, that’s about 10 miles from us, and flights from Exeter airport cancelled. Not venturing out today!
  • Ah, sounds like the worst has hit south of us then.   The forecasters were saying earlier in the week that they were not sure whether it would divert downwards.

Direct Line have just sent an email with advice on preparations.  Things like check your roof tiles and go up and replace any loose ones.  Hmm, maybe not while the actual storm is in progress! 😁

Rutland. Northerly backing North Westerly, 5 mph occasionally 10. Dry. Hazy sun. Good.
    Rutland, England
  • Most informative, Ben. 👍
  • I wasn't sure whether to post this here, or in the Sense of Humus.

I took a screenshot of part of an article from the BBC.

I wasn't sure whether the places that Brighton and Hove City Council were closing, were defined as a business, an attraction or a school!!

Its murder here right now in the channel islands. Greenhouse is shot to pieces. I knew I should have removed the glass but decided not to. Trees down everywhere roads blocked my gardens littered with neighbours roof tiles its pretty bad at the moment.

To dangerous to venture out I managed to recover two full panes of glass but left it at that as its suicidal to do anymore than that. Set to go on for a few more hours then drop to force 8.
