I managed to do some gardening today as it was neither torrential nor galeforce, still got most of my bulbs to plant as I just wasnt well enough after covid then awful weather or I was away... argh! Chipping away, got to get it done this month!
Also moved my 'not Ascot but stormy weather' out of its pot into the border, put the lovely 'Its a wonderful life' in the pot & planted Twilight zone in the space I dug an old ceonothus out of, hopefully they all do well...
Merry christmas rosarians, hope santa brings you all more roses... or garden spaces! (I think we've got the Roses covered )
The GW special, yesterday, featured a section weaving roses as art forms. Has anyone here tried it? I have had a very basic go at creating a pillar by wrapping canes around a structure. It didn't work very well. I have tried loops in the sky, but the canes rubbed against each other too much and caused wounding. They were also too high to easily deadhead.
The work they show - created by a dedicated rose pruner - is amazing. She ties every intersection to create a firm structure. I have a Rosa City of York (as was given as an example). Seeing their results, I am glad to have it. Though mine is about three inches high and not doing well. It's not a rambler, as they stated.
I really enjoyed watching it, @fire. I don't have space or patience in the quantities required to try this technique, but it was stunning. Looking back now at the stills, I can't help but see (middle photo) some kind of SAS training exercise! ...🤔
Sorry to witness the demise of the forum. 😥😥😥😡😡😡I am Spartacus
Continuing on the theme of rose scultpture, it was head gardener, Mark Edwards at Asthall that came up with it (although no doubt it has been used in other times and places). He was asked to transform the garden for a scultpture exhibition. He suggested that though training rose canes horizontally causes the hormones to flow better for floriferousness, training canes in a circle makes for even more blooms in a small space. That would be worth testing out. He trained Jenny (Niff)
Merry Christmas! Desdemona was out on Christmas Day (blurry pic attached). It was 13deg here! It's barely that in my native town in New Zealand, where it's summer!
I really like Nif Barnes's work, Fire, but it's a level of artistry that would definitely be beyond me.
