Still some roses in the garden, the warm weather in early autumn triggered another flush but the buds are now sodden and give colour but aren't photo worthy. Some pots were more sheltered from Ciarán. Frilly CuffBlue for YouLove SongEdit to add LtoR Faustinia, Joie di Vivre, unknown, Medeo ,above Utopia, behind that OdysseyLots of buds on Dames de Chenonceau and I've dragged it under cover where I am really appreciating its scent as I pass.
I've just been given a David Austin R. 'The Generous Gardener' and would appreciate some advice on where to plant it in my garden... I currently don't have any free treillis nor any space to erect new ones, so have been toying with the idea of an arch/pergola. I would plant The Generous Gardener on one side and probably a Clematis on the other side.
This is a small selection of arches that I have found available in France, prices around 200€ - 300€. What should I go for?
Any recommendations re total height/width of arch, etc.?
@Papi Jo I have TGG on a 6ft open to both sides trellis, it is 5 yrs old. It is vigorous and would happily cover a fence twice as high. I keep it to about 12ft wide, bending the fat canes veerry carefully, I've snapped plenty, but as I say it is vigorous. So I'd recommend as big a structure as you can manage. I hope yours does well for you. It manages partial shade well btw
@Papi Jo my 4 year old GG grows up my house. This year it reached the first floor windows despite my efforts to keep bending it sideways. It is vigorous, as Tack says.
Unfortunately mine is also a blackspot and vine weevil magnet. I'm going to have to spray next year I think.
Slowly building a wildlife garden, in a new build in East Yorkshire.
I have a Rosa Crimson Glory, of the same given dimensions. It is very vigorous and a bit too much for a 3m x 2.5m arch. It needs quite a bit of keeping on top of. As mentioned, I would go for a pergola, or as large an arch as you can get. 3x2.5m was as large as I could find (the width of my garden).
I am no expert @Papi Jo so I wouldn't like to say you couldn't keep it on those arches but I don't think I could. As it is I once posted a picture of basal canes swaying 6ft above my trellis and Marlorena told me I'd let it get away from me. It seemed to happen very quickly. I snapped one of those canes trying to ease it down in small increments. This is it in its second season with me. I do let the laterals do their thing above the trellis top and try to control the main canes.
