Oh that's unfortunate. Thanks for the photo pitter-patter. Currently it's planted in front of fence which it is supposed to cover. If it only flowers off the top might need to move it where it can go around an obelisk or similar.

Are climbers usually only flower off the top? DA says their climbers flower from lower down - I'm hoping my newly planted The Pilgrim will do that. I just assumed Peach Melba, being rose of the year, surely can do the same, which I imagine would have been a characteristic to be evaluated.

I have hoped for the same, but this has not been the case in my situation. Different roses grow differently for different people, so I would be curious to see how it does for you.

Other roses flower all the way, especially if trained well.

Pitter Patter's looks lovely in that setting but I think it needs to be trained differently for a more prolific flowering, with some judicious pruning lower down and spreading out the canes.  Even so, you would expect it to produce flowers all the way down though.

Here's a 2 minute video on youtube of it in all its glory.

I shall keep you updated. It's leaving up quite well but it was pruned within an inch (ok maybe 2) of its life - literally! - when I received it, so we'll see how fast it grows.

I'm trying to learn how to train climbers to get the best out of them. I have a new Ghislaine de F and Mme Issac Pereire each near their own 1.9m obelisk. Hope that's enough. The Pilgrim will go up along a window then turn left at about 6' then along the top horizontally. Not sure how all these will work out but live and learn!

@pitter-patter, that rose has grown incredibly well and looks absolutely gorgeous over the pergola. Lovely.
