  • I have been a bit worried that my roses and other pots were on concrete flags with no feet. So today I went to the local timber merchant and got them to cut a length of 3"x 1" into 2" lengths. After I explained what i wanted them for the was amazed because he said there would be about 70 bits! So i told him that I had counted my pots before I went and gave up at 50. Lots are small and don't need feet but I'm sure they will all get used eventually. And all for a tenner!

@Marlorena - is that all the same rose for us to guess? Not that I have any idea.

Bricks or slates or tiles (going free) would probably last longer. I have to say that I have never ever had a problem with pots not draining because of what they were sitting on. If they are not draining it's always because the holes got blocked from the inside. If pots are sitting in a dip and the dip fills with water, then perhaps there would be a problem. But I don't really see the point of chocks. Chocs, yes. Chocks no.

@Fire. I'm nt completely sure that they are necessary myself. I have grown things in pots for years and only once had a problem with a dwarf conifer where the drainage holes had become blocked. Hence looking for a reasonably priced option. The wood is pressure treated so will hopefully last longer, and if I can be bothered I may treat it with preservative if it ever stops raining. And at least it has stopped me worrying.

I wouldn't know where to get hold of free bricks or tiles.

    Totally agree about chocs.

You have set us a difficult task @Marlorena. I'm sure I have to be your understudy for ages before I can identify them.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)
