@Fire mine is very vigorous. I cut mine down from 7ft to 4ft mid summer. Very thick strong stems and so many of them. I'm cutting mine back to about 1ft this time as it got too tall this year. I find mine to be a flower machine. Easily 400 blooms from this year. Despite the hard mid summer cut back it is still tall again. Here it is today:
Still a smattering of blooms in late October. That Hazel fence it is towering over is 6ft. With this awful wet weather you still won't find a leaf with blackspot on it (maybe in the centre where there is no poor circulation). When cut hard back it has a better habit and shape in my opinion. Like this:
Some stems have 20+ buds:
I'm sure you will love it.
Nice late summer treat for me was a late ordering of a Harlow Carr standard which produced its first flush in October:
What has really amazed me is the health, vigour and blooms of my new Jacque C roses. It has no black spot and it has grown at least double the size of all my new Austins this year. It is healthier than the 'Best for Health' Austin ones and it was bred 200 years ago. In October it has produced some stunning blooms with the most amazing scent:
@Alfie_ I'm sure you are taking extremely good care of your plants. They are impressive. My spot for CM is quite limited so I will have to keep it trimmed, but I would like that height and blooming.
@Gartener Are you still growing Lady Hillingdon climbing? I am wondering how you are finding it - and others too who might be growing it. I am in my first year with it and it has thrown out good long canes. I lost a lot of leaf early in the year to sawfly, but now the plant looks healthy. Gartener's looks very lovely and what I am hoping for (below). T White says it is "free flowering" but I know
other people on the forum have not found it so. Mine is east facing and
suspect it will want to jump over the fence.
@Fire ive got lady H - is yours balling terribly in rain? Mines in a not great spot but 2nd year has really started to grow.
If anyone wants Brother Cadfael its in stock for preorder here; https://www.leafytiger.co.uk/rose-brother-cadfael-5l-potted-p1439 ive had a few roses from them (growers) and theyve been great. Its a lovely thornless discontinued Austin with big sturdy stems and a lovely scent. Mines about 8years old and still flowering right now. Here it is from summer;
No sign of my Eglantyne (or the other parcel not delivered at the same time by Evri) so being able to order a bargainous Brother C soothed my chagrin a lot.😁
So I got in to upright the obelisks and gently did it. I have ordered some stakes ( @Nollie ). Thanks for the tips and suggestions.
Whilst doing this the David Austin order arrived! So after a good soak (lovely root system on them) in they went:
The Royal Jubilees are to replace the Princess Anne Standards and so are in the pots by the front door, which will look good once I manage to finish re-gravelling the paths.
They look as if they survived ok @PeterAberdeen, thankfully. We cracked and lit the log burner last night, but it’s gone weirdly warm again today. The only reason I look at the weather forecast is to see how ridiculously way off it is!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
