    I thought cooldoc might have been referring to red ants..

  • Should I be concerned about the purplish marking on stems of Claire Austin? I’m wondering if this is blackspot? We are rather prone to it here, but Claire’s leaves aren’t generally too badly affected.  Should I be aiming to take these stems out?

    Thanks again everyone.. probably I was in a hurry to get rid of them that I forgot to take a pic @Marlorena. Well the roses are in the ground now.. fingers crossed all is well..

    I did notice that the last year purchase from TCL (atleast some of the roses) had a slow root growth compared to many others.. I don't remember if those particular specimens were poor or overall a TCL thing..

    After more than 3 years, most Austins were root bound in huge terracotta pots. Had to chop them by 1/3rd before putting into the ground.. not just Austins.. most of them were chopped up and planted to fit the hole rather than trying for a big planting hole.. Retrospectively I felt that would have been a bit too much for them. Even 4rth year roses will behave like 1st year I guess(essentially it was as if I am planting bare roots😳 )

    @Super gardener
    In the first photo the cane on the left does not look good to me.  In the 2nd picture neither cane looks ok, but if there are new shoots coming out from them, best left on.
    Without seeing the whole plant, it's difficult to make a judgement call on that.
    The pink spots on green canes are nothing much to worry about at this stage.

    @Lizzie27 grows 'Claire Austin', perhaps she can advise further.

    @Super gardener and @Marlorena, I haven't noticed similar markings on my Claire Austin but don't tend to take much notice unless they definitely look dead. I'd be inclined to leave them be and see what they flower/leaf like later.

    Smashing gift Marlorena, your OH has good taste although I suspect he might have had a nudge.

    I'm quite happy with my bargain bouquet of red roses from a supermarket which I was in yesterday. Must present my OH with the bill!

    congrats @Marlorena I would have gotten my OH the same, only if....... she was a rose person like me.. then it would have been like treating myself as well :p I must say, she would not be happy when some plants turn up at the door tomorrow.. :#

    Is there a time limit to the voucher? probably you can wait for the New releases..

    @cooldoc
    It's funny but I was looking at info on ants earlier today, which is where I got the idea they were red ants, and I saw those yellow ones, but didn't think it could be those as I've not seen them in gardens before.  Interesting and colourful, but a nuisance in a pot.

    Yes the voucher is valid for 2 years from date of purchase, so no hurry for me to buy, bare root or potted.

    @Lizzie27
    ..thanks, and glad you enjoyed your red roses, can't beat them can you..?

  • Hi @Marlorena, lovely present. Can I ask if you are now happy to use the DA rose food? I know a while ago you did not like the new formulation. Would you recommend it? Or have I missed something?
