@puschkinia and @Marlorena I had a climbing rose Meg at my last house in Dordogne, France. I planted it in 1991 and it was still there when I moved house in January 2021.
I used to prune off the ends with the hips in February/March. It had big, beautiful flowers which were slightly scented and it repeated just a bit after the main flush. It grew quite tall but not very wide.
Sorry for replying so late, I missed this. Oh that's great to know, thanks. Tall & narrow-ish is perfect for me because my garden is small. I'll see how the flowers come out this year, which I think will be the rose's third. Perhaps now it's a bit more mature it'll repeat at least a bit.
I have been on a garden centre tour in the rain this afternoon - well, one was B & Q but I only looked at the gardening stuff. I have bought a little potted patio rose, White Patio. It looks rather nice. Has anyone else grown it?
I've asked this question before but I still can't make my mind up. What would you put on here marked in pink ? Area is 8ft tall by 8ft in either direction so need to be a good size , I've been preparing the ground today how I see a DA discount through the post soon.
Ideally good scent and not yellow / orange. Ghislaine feligonde in the foreground and malvern hills on the shed just out of picture that's why no yellows .
I am going with Iceburg on the left with clematis summer sweet love - Wisteria Multijuga in the middle .
@Perki The climbing rose I would choose for that spot is 'Mary Delany'.. as opposed to a rambler. In fact, the pink lines you've drawn in, is exactly how it grows when against a pillar or other support. Upright, bushy growth that quickly ascends to 8 feet and then it has enough substance to be trained across in the manner you show.
Lovely scent, pink flowers continuously produced, and beautiful healthy foliage to go with it, in fact the foliage I found an outstanding point. Almost thornless too. What more could you ask? I lost all my photos of this rose except one, which I struggled to keep at 8 feet, but you can see how upright it is in the photo, showing the top part of the plant only. At this height you would be wanting to start to train it across, I didn't have such a support structure in place. I took the photo standing on a ladder and it flowers all the way down. Choice is yours of course, hope you find one you really like..
Thanks Marlorena I didn't consider Mary delany for some reason I thought it were a shrub rose , after more research its changed its name which probably though me off . I were considering New Dawn but MD looks to be more interesting .
Still thinking of Axendre Girault but I don't think it be as prolific or as scented and possible to big . I like the colour of Souvenir Du Docteur Jamain but its doesn't look like it will attain the height I want or be reliable as newer roses. Guinee as well but hmmm maybe another troublesome rose
I got some clematis today from Sarah Raven, formerly Taylor's and very pleased with them, so if anyone is considering ordering from her, I would say order with confidence. They're in 2L pots, and I normally order from Thorncroft 3L pots, but they didn't have what I wanted in stock..
She sends them out by Yodel, but I received tracking with a 2hr delivery slot.
I have Guinee still and like it and am glad to have it. The scent is wonderful. Not what I would call a bushy rose and the scent doesn't waft. The scent is apparent when you stick your nose in and when cut for the house.
