Supplemental: The winds have toppled the obelisks that were holding Lady of Shalott and The Poet's Wife.
Can I prune them down now (I know roses are tough and resilient) and bed the obelisks in deeper or should I wait till spring before pruning? I'd rather not snap anything whilst carrying out remedial works in case I do un-necessary damage.
Thanks, in advance, for your thoughts.
Hard to say what to do for the best without seeing the damage Peter. Is there no way you can just push the obelisks back in for now, maybe reinforce with a stake or three? Any snapped canes need pruning off, the soil re-firmed around the roots if they’ve been wrenched out the ground a bit, otherwise I’d try not to prune more than a third off at this time of year.
Not sure if that’s much use, I’m really just bumping your post to see if anyone has better advice for you!
I can trim off a third (the canes are about 4 ft) and that will allow me to upright the obelisks and bed them in better. It will save me pruning them in February!
I thought that would be possible, but just wanted to check. I'll do it on Sunday as tomorrow is meant to be more rain and wind.
I now have Geoffrey Hamilton rose from Barnsdale gardens... ARRRGGGH at the packaging though!! The spikey rose was in its pot in the middle of this... you can imagine the amount of stabbings and mess unpacking! Shredded card was all in the leaves & branches, inches deep all ontop of the compost & it went everywhere when I opened it
Rose is fine, pruned, new growth bent / snapped from transit but thats fine this time of year.
My 'mill on the floss' is enroute. Nothing else sent yet that im aware of! Ive got styles, frys, cottage memories and no doubt some more ive impulse ordered and forgotten!
Im a lot better post Covud but not up to digging etc, so any arrivals get dumped in the usual empty rose pots with soil and added to rose corner down the side for now!
Collage of mostly assorted singles: Clockwise from left: Ulmer Munster, Super Trouper, Lady Marmalade, It's a wonderful life, Chandos Beauty Bordure Camaieu, Sweet Honey, Golden Celebration, a cutting taken in winter - looks like Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Astronomia, Wild Rover. Golden Showers, Timeless Charisma, the Churchill rose, Vanessa Bell, Our Beth and Marchenzauber.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
And my first rose parcel to go missing- claimed delivered but not shown in the photo which wasn't even taken from our property🙄- via Evri, David Austin. Why oh why can't they use a proper courier? Royal Mail is better! If they don't replace it (Eglantyne) I will cancel my other DA order.
