Almost everyone does it.. Trewor white goes one step further... For eg, the 'Pheno geno' or Poulsen ones have multiple names in their website.. which is annoying and confusing..
@WAMS@cooldoc I also find this annoying and confusing. Unfortunately it seems to be an eternal problem with rose nurseries. I found this quote in The Gardeners' Magazine from 1827...
"Almost every variety has nearly half a dozen of names, and that
though some commercial catalogues enumerate above 1000 of these names
; yet that it is allowed by the best judges about Paris and Rouen,
that there are only between 300 and 400 distinct sorts in the
nurseries."
Don't grow up - grow sideways.
Gardening in the West Midlands on a mix of neutral loamy sand & Victorian building rubble.
Double delight in the pot, glad I rescued this rose. Ingrid Bergman, not quite as deep red as earlier in the season but blooms very regularly throughout season and it's had hardly any blackspot. Also a winner of worlds best rose at some point.
Yes, the rose world has always been somewhat cut-throat it seems, going back centuries.. the famous old rose 'Comte de Chambord' is a case in point.. as it's likely to have been renamed by French nurserymen Moreau et Robert, who having obtained it, then claimed it as their own invention, when in fact it was likely bred by Daniel Boll some years earlier, and called 'Mme. Boll' after his wife..
'Jacques Cartier' another famous old rose, probably suffered a similar twist..
I am annoyed by the Pheno Geno rose names, I can't even reliably remember which one iswhich of the ones I have. Luckily I haven't liked most of them and they are gone or doomed. I doubt I'll buy more.
The Anniversary Rose, also fom HelpMe Find
I like this rose but that many names is daft. Fabulous scentRhapsosy in BlueTottering by GentlySpecial Anniversary, assumed this was a rename but not soWilliam Shakespeare 2000, DA re using a nameGruss an Aachen
Jason at Fraser Valley has put up two vids on the science of choosing fertilisers for roses. One is a short overview and one is a longer dive. I would be interested to hear people's take on the content. I use a bog standard pellet rose food twice a year and tom liquid feed when I remember. I have mostly climbers and ramblers, no roses in pots and pretty standard amended London clay soil (nothing odd). x
