I was thinking that too about Annabelles dance @Dovefromabove There's been many others in different series that have played the 'emotional' card. Some mentioning something every week. I liked Bobby's dance.
I saw a comment elsewhere that said Layton seemed to be "making each dance his own" as opposed to learning the basics and sticking with them.
Nikita seems happy enough to display Layton's dancing skills more as entertainment (l'm not putting this very well, but hopefully l'm getting my meaning across), and really has been doing this since around week 2.
I can't remember if Shirley has been picking up on the lack of basic steps over several weeks, but if so it would explain why she would have opted to save Angela and Carlos.
As next week is Musicals week, l'm expecting Layton to go full on "West End".
I really enjoyed Ellie's dance - superb chorography and excution. Loved Annabelle's Paso which was elegant and subtle tho I didn't like her yellow skirt.
I thought Angela's cha-cha was technically very good with excellent isolation between her upper and lower body plus amazing legs again. For once SHirley's critique was spot on.
For once I thought Nigel did very well in a difficult dance for males.
Didn't like the almost emotional blackmail aspect of Bobby's dance and really disliked Leyton's performance. I don't think he understands dance at all and thinks he can just get by with physical and athletic performances and he wasn't that good this week. Shirley spot on again.
And I really hated his costume and that dreadfully cut green shirt they put on Nikita.
I haven't seen the results yet so I'm not reading any further, but, again @Obelixx has said just what I think.

Annabelle's husband died earlier this year and doing Strictly has made her feel alive again. Bobby's mum died years ago which is sad but not something needing a tribute dance .
Shirley rightly criticised Layton for both content, technique and footwork and, whilst he certainly can put on aperformance, what he's doing isnot dance as codified by the rules of quickstep, tango, cha-cha, slow/English waltz, foxtrot etc. What they allow in Charleston, Argentine tango, salsa and couple's choice on Strictly is anyone's guess but the 10 ballroom dances have strict rules and standards.
Layton hasn't grasped this so I don't understand why any judge thinks he's better than the other competitors left.

That's bit harsh @Obelixx doesn't matter how long ago someone died. It's still his mum and he was just a small child when she died, so had to grow up without her.
@star gaze lily - so do lots of people in all walks of life and quite a few Strictly contestants have overcome adversity but they manage not to play the pity card, especially 15 years later.

Now I've seen the dance off and I think the wrong one went. For me that wasn't what I think of as an American smooth. I really enjoyed the lovely, lively and very precise Cha Cha.

I to wonder about Shirley voting for the other couple ?

Time doesn't necessarily heal a loss.
