It's that time of year again and the first 3 contestants for that year's series have been announced.
They are
Amanda Abingdon, actress, probably best known for appearing in Sherlock and Mr Selfridge.

Angela Rippon, former newsreader and broadcaster .

Leyton Williams from Bad Education.

I heard about Angela Rippon. She must be very fit as she's 78.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

I know I should keep an open mind - but my heart's already on Angela Rippon.  Wonderful example of ageing gracefully - and never forgotten for that magical Morecambe and Wise dance!

Another announcement this morning. Krishnan Guru-Murthy the Channel 4 newsreader.
  • @pr1mr0se I'd love it if they did a nod to that and also recreated the dress.

@februarysgirl I've read that there is already some talk of (planning for?) that dress and those high kicks to be featured.  Angela is still supple - can do the splits and does pilates every morning, apparently.  First class candidate imo

Looking forward to seeing Angela Rippon but haven't a clue who anyone else is.

I know it was a long time ago but Angela Rippon trained as a dancer before joining the BBC and going on to be a newsreader.  Strictly really should go back to the original idea of contestants with little or no dance experience.
  • @KT53 Except the first series of Strictly featured Claire Sweeny who went to Italia Conti and had extensive experience in musical theatre as well as Verona Johnson who went to a performing arts school. How much Verona's studies were spent on dance I don't know although I would say she'd had more dance training than any of the other contestants that year excepting Claire Sweeny.

So many girls do dance class when young - ballet/hip hop/jazz etc - that I don't think it's reasonable to find "celebrities" who've never danced.  What counts most is how they approach the competition and how they apply themselves to the training which can be gruelling.

I rather think Angela Rippon will throw herself at it whole heartedly.

  • @Obelixx I did ballet, stage and tap dancing between the ages of 5 and 16 which by the standards of some of the commenters I've seen online, makes me a trained dancer. There's definitely a big difference someone who took dance classes and someone who's a trained dancer. Ten years of ballet and my turn out was still pretty poor, still had to be told to tuck my butt under and put my shoulders down. Did get my dancing school's "Best Tap Dancer" award in 1991 though 😁
