Finally managed to finish catching up with it all this morning. Must admit that generally speaking l thought the standard was pretty good. Anton made me laugh with his comments about Les Dennis.
I did get a bit emotional watching Annabel and Johannes, her husband would have been so proud.
As for Nigel Harman, wow ! I was a bit thrown when Tess called him Colin, l assume that is the name of a character he plays/played ? And who knew Dave Arch was really a member of Nirvana 😁 ?
Nigel Harman gave his Paso persona the name "Colin" in rehearsal, @AnniD - chanelling his "alter ego", I suppose...
I reckoned a lot of the "celebs" were remarkably good for week one. The scores were very inconsistent, but I don't suppose that's surprising when they have so many performances to judge one after another - and they can't apply the usual criteria like difficulty of steps etc on the first dance, for those who've never danced before. Though having said that, you then get someone like Ellie, who in spite of apparently having no dancing experience just seemed to absorb everything she was taught.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Shirley's scoring has always been biased towards her favourites. Add to that, if any of the male judges made personal comments about the female celebs bodies in the way she does about the men, there would be hell to pay.
Really enjoyed last night's show. All danced well for a first week dance. Although Layton Williams is a dancer in the West End anyway, so has an advantage. Have a couple of favourites, but think quite a few will do well.....early days 😉
@Obelixx Agreed. I don't recall any other judge displaying any bias the way she does. Len would occasionally mark down if the pro challenged him during his critique but every week was a clean slate. Whatever had happened in the preceding week(s) wouldn't affect his judgement. That Shirley gets so much abuse online doesn't help. Genuine criticism gets lumped in with it and disregarded. I really hope she doesn't get the little shoes out this year. That was unbelievably patronising.
@KT53 She really needs to pack those comments in. It's a horrendous double standard, uncomfortable to watch and must be awkward as hell for the male celebs.
@star gaze lily I think Layton's biggest problem may be reigning in his exuberance. That and having to fight years worth of muscle memory. It all depends really on how adaptable he is at learning all the different techniques. The public can be easily won over with great performing skills but if he can't master the technical side of things, he's not going to win over the judges.
The way the audience boo Craig the minute he opens his mouth drives me mad. I know he's approaching it from a different perspective to Shirley and Co, but he's the only one who really seems to tell it like it is (Anton tries his best but always tempers any criticism with a joke).
At least scoring people 2,3 or 4 in week one leaves him somewhere to go with his marking, unlike Shirley who's already scoring 8. It does make me smile when he offers his critique and begins "l agree with Motsi/Shirley/ Anton, as they can't boo him then.

I fast forward through all the rehearsal room stuff and other waffle so l missed that.
