  My first picking of yellow dwalf french bean 'Hildora' and my second week of runner bean 'Scarlet Emperor'.

  
  

  I've been picking a large handful of runner beans every one or two days. Production seems to be slower this year as compared to previous years.

  
  

  Cooked by boiling in salted water, the yellow french bean has a softer crunch than the runner bean and it has an almost potato-like taste.

  These Maskotka toms really are a great variety and have ripened here no trouble. However my experiment with home-made compost needs some tweaking. Think I might have enriched it too much as most of the toms are splitting. Two plants side-by-side and the fruit from the shop-bought compost pot (although a bit later) has been consistently good.
