thanks @Eustace but as Edhelka pointed out, its the compost bit that I am worried.. can't see any other reason why these roses are not doing well.. heavy terracotta pots with thorny roses.. I was struggling to get few of them off the pots during winter.. and then the topping up, nothing much to do with used up compost in a small plot.. :/

how are they still selling bareroots..? sorry if you have mentioned before.. but what are those bare roots @ElbFee

Pots are tricky to keep going, there is only so much you can scrape off the top without damaging the roots, the latter outgrow the pot eventually and the spectre of repotting arises. Every year I vow to reduce them and every year they seem to multiply.

@cooldoc I do have some large ceramic pots, but glazed or painted externally to avoid evaporation. Since the early days (anyone remember my Gertrude Jekyll pot saga?!) I now find a plastic pot that fits snugly inside them. Much easier to lift them out in the plastic pot without having to grapple with the heavy one. I also double pot the plastic pots, which provides an additional layer of insulation to guard against fried roots.

The Prince is one that missed the new regime. Needless to say I keep putting it off!

@Nollie that’s a shame, although I suppose it is fairly similar to bring me sunshine so I will be content with my bms!
