If anyone wants to see what the new DA looks like, kind of in person, check out Ben Hamilton Anderson on youtube. He was sent one a couple of days in advance and did an unboxing. It IS fragrant according to him.
He's a bit behind... some people here were sent one a year in advance..
Knockout roses were invented by an American .. Will Radler, although they are sold by others.. Mr Radler created the incredible 'Brite Eyes' which has proved resistant to black spot against virtually all known strains in the N. Hemisphere..
I'm not sure why I felt the need but I've had to put a correction on HMF about this 'Dannahue' rose [I keep wanting to say Dana who?].. they had the width of this rose down as 10' 5''... !
Thanks @tesongo. One of my most looked forward to blooming events of the year. unfortunately I don't know the varieties as we inherited them with the house. They are very mature plants with main trunks of 500mm girth so quite old varieties I would imagine.
First fully open bloom! It’s a micro one at 8cm across but this is Princess Anne:
It’s got bigger now it’s fully open but as Nollie said hopefully just a rogue one as it’s a fairly new plant.
I was narrowing the search option on DA to include only ones that have one an RHS AGM award. This brings up 60 odd roses of various breeders. I came across ‘Bonica’ and checking this out on other websites it gets very strong reviews saying it’s one of the most floriferous floribundas going. Does anyone have this? Would like to know people’s opinions on it.
I am not sure if all the Youtube reviews are honest.. especially when every rose is fragrant and fabulous..
Louise Odier.. This was in bud since 3 weeks atleast.. possibly with all the rain the outer petals have got stuck, yet they try to open.. 1st year it was not scented.. now I just love it.. old rose plus a rose sherbet scent..
Clementina Carbonieri.. not fruity or rose.. to my nose its a strong tea scent.. not a bushy rose.. but would be always in bloom..
Twilight zone.. strongly scented normally, but hardly any scent by evening today..
Returned from a weekend at parents to find a few more roses out! Pics below. Still wrestling blaçkspot here, lost a lot of leaves on some. I could swear the sprays made it worse, certainly no better! New DA is pretty but im just... not excited by it? I got the new yellow Bring me Sunshine last year, but I have a yellowy apricot bed & theres only so many yellows I have room for. Dicksons unusual new roses I was genuinely excited by though, and I'm excited to see the 2 I got bare root this season bloom. Mme Antoine Maari out the front. Wilting in heat but covered in buds so will give her a good soak tomorrow!
Purple Tiger Purple Tiger Rosa des cistertiens (usually pinker!) Evelyn Wylde / Natalija. Not this orange, just the light, its more apricot. Smells lovely. Austin corner, Lady of Shallott at the back bursting out, crown princess Margaritte on the arch and munstead wood in its pot at the front. Out of view on left summer song is in its pot too. The hulthemias are COVERED in buds, I did not prune back enough...big climbers at thr back finally budding now.
I remember when I first visited the David Austin gardens I was looking for a Jude the Obscure in the shop and I would have bought one there and then. (Very unlike me, I'm not an impulse buyer, but it smelled so good in the garden)
They didn't have it in stock, or even a section where it's name would have been. Maybe they were winding it down even then.

I managed to get to Hitchin garden centre and Harkness. Most roses are in bud with not much blooming, so in line with what I’m experiencing at home.
Olivia was out though and seems like she’s often first to bloom for many.
Also my Evelyn is arriving today! Shall I leave her in her pot for a bit or can I plant her out?
