What a lovely selection of roses. @pippip I loved the surprise in your last photos! That squirrel seemed to be enjoying the scent of Gertrude Jekyll! Mine opened yesterday on a weedy stem but the other buds look bigger. This is my weedy one!
Sorry to witness the demise of the forum. 😥😥😥😡😡😡I am Spartacus
@Eustace yes roses do seem to behave differently when own root, although I only have my one MW to go on so others will know that better than me.
@Pam285 yes I’d say that’s LEH, that burgundy growth is very distinctive.
@pitter-patter, paradise indeed! Can you remind me of the name of the lovely lilac-pink climbers on your arch?
A few more survivors of the storms. Two bourbons and a few moderns..
Mme. de Sévigné, weatherproof and sturdy. Wish I hadn’t pruned back a couple of long canes growing in the wrong direction last year, think thats set growth back a bit:
Julia Child would probably survive a nuclear disaster:
Delbard roses not available in the UK..
Avalanche Abricot, the more I see the more I like. Another all-weather rose with very long-lasting, pleasantly fragrant blooms:
This will be the first flush for Souvenir de Marcel Proust. It has huge, gorgeous and strongly citronella-scented blooms, but was sparing with them last year. More reluctant HT than the floribunda it’s supposed to be:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Marlorena Probably a bit of a long shot, but any idea what this might be Marlorena. The label disappeared many moons ago, but I can't remember whether it's a DA or TW. The camera has over egged the pink, it's a bit more subtle than what's in the pic. If it's any help the buds are very elongated. Cheers.
Nice selection of roses @ElbFee. You have created an amazing garden @pitter-patter. Love the 🐿️ among the roses @pippip. @Nollie Avalanche Abricot is now in my wishlist. Spotted a 🦋 on the alliums, they're buzzing with 🐝🐝. Sorry about the picture quality as I had to zoom in to take the photo without disturbing it in any way. Togmeister - lightly scented for a smell-challenged me. Uetersens Rosenprinzessin photo bombing. Desdemona still going strong, even though displaying symptoms of thirst in this hot weather. Marchenzauber Ghislaine de Feligonde Oddfellows rose, a Fryer's rose. Pity about the droopy flowers, but the scent of Jude the Obscure is fabulous. And I love Golden Showers when it is fully open like this.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
Gosh the roses are going over quickly in this sun. Given it's only in the 20s DegC I was not expecting crispy Boscobel and Desdemona among others. Has the cold Spring set them up for this I wonder? Or maybe the sun is just stronger because it is June and last year the heatwave was later? I am paying very particular attention to your roses @Nollie, it seems your experiences are increasingly relevant to the weather situation here. My cull list for this year is getting pretty long
Houseguests have gone so pottered, snipped and deadheaded in the cool morning. Only took this one pic to record the peonies before they go. Kew Gardens in the back corner, Scarborough Fair, The Generous Gardener and Claire Austin
@Eustace, @Tack, that’s the reason I’ve resisted Desdemona, not heat tolerant by all accounts. Dee-Lish/The Anniversary Rose etc., was the absolute worst rose in heat I’ve ever had, even in shade. Be interesting to see how the most recent Austins do in hotter summers, if they are as good as some of the older ones.
I think TW need to update their Delbard list!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
They do! But TW are annoying me this year... they keep adding more bareroot stock in dribs and drabs, and having already amended my order I really can't be bothered doing it again. But at least I have Mutabilis, Petit Prince and Abraham Darby on the way in autumn. (Would have been good to get Mme Antoine Mari and Soeur Emmanuelle, though... snaffle frazzle rizzle, Rick Rastardly.)
And yes @Tack and @Nollie My Deelish after a half-day of 18 deg heat.🙄 What a scent, though.
Which roses are you now looking askance at, @Tack?
I'd be interested in knowing your top performers for heat @Nollie, especially Austins since those are available in Europe and here in the US. Quite disappointed to see that Desdemona doesn't perform well in heat - it was in my top 3 wanted list!
David Austin have sent my replacement Malvern Hills which is at least double the size of the sickly specimen they sent me last time 😀
My new Roald Dahl has a promising number of buds and one has just opened, lovely smell.
Eustacia Vye still looking good with loads of blooms
Unknown rose which always has the glossiest leaves, loads of blooms and no black spot, it must be a toughie as I’ve moved it twice, once whilst it was flowering (out of necessity), it really is a trouble free rose 😀 Astrantia Roma, it’s first year and has tons of flowers And my first dahlia has opened, the promise of things to come
