You then have another 1.50m to cill level of your 1st floor windows, that you will then eventually want to train over, so a spread of about 4.0m or so. So you'll be looking at a rose about 4.0 x 4.0m overall. I think lady of the lake is a great call. It was the best performing climbing rose at Austins rose garden last year, IMO, and is better in the foliage, so to speak, than on photos. It is a stunning rose. If you like the look of that style of rose, and who doesn't?, than maybe take a look at City of York also.
Hello fellow rose lovers. I want to order a rose for my dear old dog who passed away recently who's name was Belle. I wanted ideally to get Crown princess Margareta for her as she was a princess! and she was orange in colour too! - (red and white) but sadly when I looked online she has now been retired! Every time I make up my mind to order a rose I am clearly not quick enough and they have all gone by the wayside and I have missed out on Munstead Wood, Lady Emma Hamilton and now Crown Princess I have decided to go with Belle Isis which says on DA that it is an old rose. It also says suitable for shaded areas (it will be east facing) but on the growing conditions it says full sun....confused with that....Is the only difference with an old rose is that it flowers once only? Do you all find you have to order in roses when you see them and act fairly quickly? I do have roald Dhal, prob my fave and fab in shade, Olivia rose, Desdemona, and Queen of Sweden - thanks everyone. Apologies for rambling. A photo of beautiful Belle X
Thanks for your suggestions and advice i will take a look at my local garden centre at the weekend and see if Lady of he lake is in stock, i like the look of her very much!
on a side note I got my house last year so was the first year with a garden and planted three David Austin roses
Sceptered isle, James L Austin and the poet's wife below are how the three are getting on this year! unfortunately i can't for the life of me remember which is which and the name tag that came with them blew away in the wind. I am certain the smaller and first one is the poets wife tho!
I seem to have lots of green bugs on all the new growth this year any idea best way of getting rid of these?
@Copperdog im so sorry for your loss. Theres actually a lovely yellow rose called Belle de Jour you might like? Its not Austin but won rose of the year previously. I have that and crown princess and can vouch its just as lovely Once flowerers are usually labelled as such if they dont repeat, old roses I believe is just the type and when they were bred, sometimes not as disease resistant as more modern hybrids, but @Marlorena will know more and probably that rose too!
@alexander.wade those are looking great! The pesky bugs are aphids easiest way is blast them off with water / soapy water in a sprayer or just squish them off, you can also encourage ladybirds which eat loads, especially the ladybird larvae! If you feed the birds they will eat them too. As longer term deterrent several of us have been feeding the roses tea with spent tealeaves round them the last few years after one of the members (Nollie?) Recommended it - the roses absorb something from it that the aphids dislike the taste of. General consensus has been very positive, really seems to have put them off some of mine!
Thankyou @JessicaS I am very lucky as a really lovely friend who also had a bulldog (we met on here and a few of us met up at Kew Gardens for the day 6 or 7 years ago is sending me belle du jour as a gift for Belle. I would also like to get something in honour of her too xx I sent my friend happy memories in January when sadly she lost her gorgeous old bully Beau xx I really appreciate your help xx
Thank you for the reply, definitely worth a try with the tea bags then! What about coffee grounds? I make coffee with freshly ground beans at home is that good for roses?

There is a lovely floriferous pink rose called "You're Beautiful" that might interest you?

Or perhaps DA may release another rose in Lady Emma H tones this summer.
