@daisym I grow some potted roses and have expanded my collection this year. I agree with Tack on the Chandos B - looks stunning in a pot. I found Princess Alexandria of Kent good too.
I bought PAoK end of May last year as a potted rose and even that same summer it produced a great second flush:
I live near the Harkness breeding centre and they sell a select few of more established roses of their popular varieties. I bought a Chandos B from them in a 15L pot. I think it’s just a year further on but it produced the most incredible flushes in the pot:
The fragrance is just incredible and the blooms are huge.
Good luck with whichever you chose, I’m sure it will work out great on that pot and location.
@Meomye when they start to bud is when I feed them. I do 2-3 weekly liquid feed and put a slow release feed in the spring before I apply a mulch. I find for fully established roses in the ground liquid feeding throughout the season is not required; just a mulch and slow release feed. Younger plants and ones in pots is when I do the 2-3 weekly liquid feed during flowering season. For pots I find it’s essential as if you just water them the nutrients get washed out quickly.
Any liquid feed will do so long as it’s rose specific as they need some key nutrients as well as the right NPK ratio. If you research online all the top rosarians who showcase roses supposedly use Uncle Tom’s Rose Tonic. I just use a standard Westland one.
For potted roses I use liquid tomato fertilizer starting around now, once a fortnight or a little and often in the watering can.. I prefer Tomorite NPK 4-3-8.. inorganic for pots.. For roses in the ground, I liquid feed a few after the first flush of blooms, through July/August, but only Austins if I think they need it, as they are such gross feeders..
'Desdemona' always amazes me with a perfect opening bloom, unaffected by weather.. 'Mutabilis'.. 'Marie Pavie'.. rather small opener..
..adieu to 'Munstead Wood'.. hello to 'Othello'.. continuing to 'wow' me, I have to say..
..including the proliferation, which I think merits a closer look, where another bud appears in the centre..
@Marlorena I'm unfamiliar with this proliferation phenomenon. How interesting!
Still just buds here. So far it looks like my Eden climbers will be the first to open, and then maybe Lichfield Angel. My Princess Charlene de Monaco is looking super strong, despite a somewhat sloppy move process late this winter. Fingers crossed it's liking the new spot!
Poor old Scarborough Fair...left neglected and unloved in the wrong spot for way to long. I've finally moved it today to a much better spot...hope it's not too late.
Just buds here too, @hallim. Nice to see another poster with PCdM. This rose seems to inspire love in a lot of people and I am keen to see what all the fuss is about! Mine is newly-planted and has already gone from three canes to four but is still quite small. Very glossy and nice, though. New to me this season Marchenzauber / Bliss / Bliss Parfuma bareroot is bigger and will hopefully flower nicely quite soon And I have a question about Jubilee Celebration (which isn't bright green/yellow in real life... that's my weirdo camera). It has several small weak new canes with a flower bud or cluster of buds at the end of each one which are probably more than a fortnight away. Would you just stake them to support the weight of the blooms since they mostly aren't quite long enough to be tied to the obelisk yet?
All of the new rose photos are very, very lovely and I especially liked @Nollie's row of beheaded roses.
@Alfie_ Yes, I had to downsize last autumn and they went, along with so many others.. shame, as they were two nice own roots.. I won't keep 'Othello' in the longer term, as it has to stay in the pot.. Buying any more roses yourself?...
@wams such healthy roses there... I probably wouldn't do anything to those little shoots you mentioned, but up to you.. I'd just leave them I think.. I was tempted to get Marchenzauber, so now I'll enjoy yours..
@peteS I hope that wasn't a wasted effort Pete... the lower part doesn't look good to me, turning black, even though the top is green.. maybe it'll send up a basal, but if that was mine I'm afraid I would have tossed it.. best of luck with yours though..
@Alfie_ I love seeing your PAoK and Chandos B. I’m going to pay a visit to Harkness next Monday, booked a pub nearby for lunch. All my birthday trips are going to involve roses this year!! Then we’re going to DA 2nd June, just hope the roses are out by then!
@Marlorena I love your Desdemona bloom, it looks almost peachy/apricot. Your Marie Pavie is more pink than I expected, I guess it bleaches out with age?
@WAMS I’m interested in both those rose - PCdM even though I can’t get hold of it and Marchenzauber. I’m also interested in lovely parfuma/summer romance, I seem to remember someone has it but not who! Also love jubilee celebration which is out of stock too, so looking forward to more photos!
@Marlorena - did you get Orthello as a potential replacement to MW? Not good enough to stay then? Yeh wow I would love to have an own root established like that. No more planned other than a climber for a rose arch I want to make in the summer. Strawberry Hill is the most likely candidate. From this thread I must say that Desdemona and Marie Pavie look great. My last purchase was going for an end of season gamble with three Sweet Honey bare roots from J Parker’s (£15 total) a few weeks back. They looked reasonable.
You going to get any potted ones this summer?
@agnasia - sounds lovely. Have fun! And happy birthday in advance.
@agnasia First blooms on roses are rarely typical of what comes later, so yes it's perhaps more pink than usual and much smaller too.. but I think it's quite pretty.. it's especially good in a pot, I've had it before. Do have a lovely time, this year I might think 2nd June a touch early but you'll enjoy it for what it is..
@Alfie_ 'Othello' was a gift to me, so I'm rather obliged to keep it for now.. but it potentially grows very large, and I couldn't have it in the garden, so it stays in a pot until it outgrows it I suppose.. 'Munstead Wood' as own root, was doing better than the grafted versions I had..
I might get another potted rose, I always think it's nice to try something new.. I don't think it'll be the latest Austin if it's named after a celebrity.. Oh your Sweet Honey looks great.. thorny one isn't it?..
