A truly gobsmacking amount of physical labour there, @PeterAberdeen. My Lark Ascending (a hand-me-down from a friend) is huge and stiff and upright - without support- and I loved your photo of the bloom. The only nuisance with it is it needs such a lot of deadheading. Worth it, though. Also very healthy. Some people are so snotty about the health of David Austins... and some of them use DA roses in their own rose-breeding.😁
Thanks for sharing the photos of the old rose beauties from Mottisfont @Discandied.
@PeterAberdeen your garden is going to look awesome in a few years. Love the Lark Ascending flower shape and colour, almost as if it glows from within.
@edhelka you have a nice rose garden too, can't take my eyes off the Purple Skyliner 😊
Lovely roses photos, not just the past few days, ever since the rose threads were started by @Marlorena 🙏 I'm sure, like me, many have dipped into this rosy world after seeing the fantastic pictures posted here.
Walferdange getting started - but very few buds this time as I missed to mulch/feed it as it is in a corner. Marchenzauber It's a wonderful life English Miss Sweet Honey 😘 Our Beth - the first flush is almost going over. Summer Song - a late starter among the DAs; droopy as well.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
Late to add my thanks to @Marlorena for all the knowledge, support and encouragement that can be found in this wonderful thread. Great resource for finding out more about health, colour, habit etc. Having bought Dedemona on advice found here (and so glad I did), I'm now thinking of buying a Lark Ascending, as I'd like to introduce some orange/peach into my garden, and am having a new bed dug. But what to add with it? Lady of Shallott looks amazing, Buff Beauty looks a little unruly, Roald Dahl or Dannahue could also work... Decisions decisions...
It certainly had a myrhh fragrance to my nose @edhelka , though fragrance can be strangely hard to pin down, so perhaps someone else would smell something different.
Some pics of the border as a whole, desperately need to do some dead heading, lots of crispy blooms! We are forecast rain over the weekend so fingers crossed that happens!!
And boule de neige doing exactly what I wanted from it! Such a good rose for a border, I think I’ll get another for the front
A couple of photos I took yesterday evening while watering my front garden (I guess DA is receiving a lot of complaints about people’s roses not doing very well, hence DA decided to issue the advice water-water-water).
Munstead Wood and Julia Child
Lichfield Angel with very droopy brunches/flowers (some of the flowers are lying on the ground face down. I need to buy a big vase, cut all of those and bring them home…)
I can understand DA saying that about watering, tbh. I can't even weed out surface weeds here as the ground is like concrete. And we haven't had the relief of storms.
Lovely borders @zugenie- don't they look good when they are deep like that?
'Lichfield Angel's blooms will become more upright as the season goes on.. they are full and heavy now, but lighter for subsequent flushes, so they won't droop.. I always thought it a better rose in September, than June..
Enjoyed the pics this morning, gardens and roses.. and those earlier from Mottisfont.. I hope to visit Mannington soon..
I'm struggling with photos of my 'Elizabeth' rose from David Austin.. I find it as dull as dishwater.. masses of blooms which do not stand out in the landscape.. if it doesn't start to 'wow' me by September, it's presence here will be debateable..
'Bring Me Sunshine' on the other hand, I think deserves 2 pics..
'Cornelia'.. 'Wild Blue Yonder'.. Geranium 'Russell Prichard'..
It's one of the highlights of my day being able to browse this thread and vicariously enjoy everyone's roses and learn from others' experiences of different varieties, so I'd like to add my thanks to @Marlorena for having the idea to start the thread some years ago, and to all the others ( too many to name ) who contribute in so many ways to the discussions.
A general view of my front ( all pots ) from Wednesday - clockwise from bottom left variegated hebe , julia child , rudbeckia autumn forest ( not yet in flower) , iceberg, chandos beauty , blush noisette ( in need of deadheading / repotting / retraining in that order). The whitish slab patio and box on the right side does not belong to me.
