@dabolem Your 'Marie Pavie' looks so lovely.. mine has suffered in the heat for some reason..
I'm wondering about your 'Deprez a Fleur Jaunes'... are you quite certain you have the correct rose? only I've not seen it look like that before, only with small, quartered frilly blooms with a button eye, rather apricot/white.. maybe it's the weather..
Did anyone get an email from David Austin about watering roses?
"With the hot weather upon us, it is really important to remember to water your roses.
We recommend watering the base of your rose(s) in either the morning or late afternoon, with a full watering can every day in these extreme temperatures."
I was a bit surprised. Yes for roses in pots but I thought over the top for roses in the ground. My daughter in France has over 120 roses and their area near Poitiers was on quite strict water restrictions last year so she couldn't water much. A lot of her roses are from David Austin and they were all fine. Her roses are magnificent this year.
120 roses — her garden must be amazing right now @Busy-Lizzie! Every day seems a bit much for roses in the ground — I water mine once a week (hasn’t rained for maybe a month now) — and not everywhere in the UK would have those extreme temperature highs.
Pheno Geno Draga/Hallie is finally starting to open
First blooms on Eustacia Vye and I must say I am VERY impressed with it. Immaculate healthy foliage. About 60 buds for first flush from this winter's bare root order (there are two in the pot). The flower actually glows - incredible. Scent is defintely like Well Being and variable throughout the day but when its highest it is very intense - citrus, lemon sherbet notes I get:
Well Being:
Variable scent which I think have figured out is strong early in the day and less intense as the day progresses. Incredible scent when it is strong.
Astrantia Burgundy Manor goes nicely with some roses in the border.
Bees also like this particular variety but don't touch others like Roma.
Queen of Sweden getting towards 3 foot already (only purchased a few weeks ago).
Yesterday I culled Velvet Fragrance, it's never been good and the few blooms it had were all crispy. I think I'm happy with everything else that is planted in the ground though. DA s abound in these morning pics. I don't think the established roses do need watering but as I have a lot of new perennials this year they do get the benefit of their water. Strawberry HillThe Lark AscendingCouldn't take a pic of the whole Bathsheba as it was into the sun but this rose just thrives in the sun and heatEngland's Rose, Silas Marner (new), Kew Gardens, The Generous Gardener, Scarborough Fair and Claire Austin. Shame Amulet Mella has no scent, otherwise it is excellent all round in the full sun. I haven't deadheaded yet, the old roses just disappear under the new ones.Vapourer Moth caterpillar, seen often here, on Proper Job
Beautiful yellow/orange roses @WAMS very interesting to see how much they opened up in just few hours
@Athelas that Pheno Geno have such a beautiful red, lovely
Amazing Astrantia @Alfie_ and your roses look so healthy.
@Marlorena I love Marie Pavie, mine take the sun only in the morning and it seems it likes it that way. I am pretty sure it is a Desprez a fleur jaunes, its flower now seem a little different, I think it is because of the constant rain and less sun than usual. Normally they have an apricot/pink hearth, right now they seem all a cream-y uniform color though.
At the beginning of May they were like this (don’t look at the horrid guests!)
I don't water flower beds or lawn, only pots every other day and newly planted species. Cornflowers, poppies, orlaya, all so called wild flowers do well even after 2 months without rain. As do established roses. If you don't survive the new climate, off you go. I don't have time to water the garden.
Variegata di Bologna has never repeated for me so far. It is at the far end of the garden so I do not mind. Tried heavy pegging on this in spring and it worked. Loads more blooms.
Tried all sorts of camera options but cannot do this true red justice. Seems unbothered by heat but is sheltered by standard Chandos Beauty.
New to me and therefore cherished more. I have a huge delphinum in light blue with it. Delightfully pastel.
Also new to me. Was looking for white-ish roses to mix with all my purples.
One of my alltime favorites for scent but unfortunately not very healthy. Maybe because it is a standard.
Porcelain teint. Looks fragile but is not, very elegantly cupped blooms.
Round one was eaten by bugs, but now a perfect cluster on Jacques. Completely healthy foliage, stays a nice compact shrub.
Is this Friesia / Korresia? Not sure. One of the roses I picked up at the rose park that had to be dismantled.
Chandos Beauty at the back. The standard that does not look good because of the stiff upright canes.
@Busy-Lizzie yes I have got the mail too. I have turned on drip irrigation daily for the past few days after seeing the wilted petals.
The garden looks colourful as most of my roses are in flowers and still waiting for 10+ roses. No one bothers here to even look at outside through window! I am really glad I can share some here. Thanking @Marlorena for creating this opportunity. I apologize in advance if Ive bombarded with many photos at one go!
Taken this morning. DA roses:
Gertrude Jekyll: glowing in the morning sun. I have got two and this one is in afternoon shade looking so much better than the other.
The Ancient Marner: third year, love the glowing shade, strong stems hold the flowers upright.
Planted most of roses during 2020 winter lockdown. Crown Princess Margarita doing really good this year. Cymbeline: still looking great. Finding it floriferous!
Kathryn Morley: The delicate petals seems to be standing strong in the full mostly afternoon sun.
Chaucer:
Golden Celebration:
Heritage:
Gentle Hermione: Own root 3 years old. Love the colour and hate the scent ! The ingenious Mr Fairchild - love the scent and petals formation. Another rose which reminds Lotus!
Evelyn - Unbeatable in size, colours and scent. Stays fresh for a long time on the plant and as a cut rose.
What a fantastic selection today, I'm so glad everyone shares and realises that even if we don't comment we really do admire and appreciate the pictures. They are so much better than looking at catalogue pics.
