The thread moves so fast now, unsurprisingly. Still time to say how grateful I am for this thread @Marlorena, thank you. It surprised me though that when I joined in June 2020 I felt that everyone on it was an expert and the thread had been going years so I was being very brave by joining It's by far the nicest bit of the forum so thank you all for that.
@PeterAberdeen I remember the joy and excitement of my first rose blooms very well. I thought Royal William was the very best, reddest, velvetiest red rose ever and that it was a miracle when Charles Darwin opened as probably the first DA style modern rose I had looked at properly close up,thought it entirely exquisite and I/ME had grown it. I still enjoy new roses very much but I'd love that excitement again.
So TCL have sent me a mystery rose again, it seems I am destined to never see whether Ducat Mella does indeed have finely sculpted petals. Anyone think this is Paul Cézanne? Possibly Claude Monet if the colour changes after this first bloom or??
.. @peteS Re The Ancient Mariner.. 4 x 4 as a minimum, or 6 x 6+ with light pruning after 3 years or so.. at that height you may want to stake it, here and there, because some heavy canes will flop during a thunderstorm, then you'll wish you had staked it..
