  • I noticed an old uPVC window in an alley not too far away, and commented to my wife that I could do something with it. You should have seen the dark look I got!!

A bit similar to the one I got when she came home one day, to find three large wooden beams in the garden, about 8ft long, and about 3inches x 8inches wide. I'd carried them about 400yards home, one at a time, from outside a house nearby.
    Great for a raised bed!!

@rowlandscastle444 that's OK as long as you got permission from whoever owned them.  A few years ago we were having our garden remodelled and our bathroom redone at the same time.  Not by the same people. :) The guy doing the bathroom went out the back of the house to get the radiator he'd removed a couple of days earlier and couldn't find it.  The people doing the garden said they had assumed it was rubbish and had taken it for scrap.  They hadn't asked and it turned out to be the most expensive piece of scrap they had ever picked up because they had to pay for our replacement radiator.

I did have the owner's blessing. I would never take anything without asking.
I'll admit that I was struggling with the weight of them for the last 100 yards or so, as I'm not exactly built for that kind of work. 🤓

i found the ‘butterfly bombs’ sign in an alley behind some shops in South London about 55 years ago. It was largely covered by brambles and nettles and I had to tug it out with some effort. Very occasionally I have seen similar plaques on eBay and the going rate is about £300.

Ah, so it was you who stole my sign. A cheque will be fine.

The postman knows to duck ,or at least apologise, when he delivers books to our house. I know some people even sniff old books. I find the smell unpleasant. Kindle books are odourless and don't take up any space,.They don't harbour creepy crawlies, infection or dust. Most importantly, they don't require shelving. Why not keep a book you're never going to read in the cloud rather than in your house?

  • I love the smell of old books in second hand bookshops. Maybe it's often the shop rather than the book. But I like to have a wander around - and maybe spend some money.  Rochester in Kent has a lovely one - often with buckets to avoid in various places, when it rains.

I know that one. My husband used to like it. I would wander about in the fresh air and look in the craft shops. I wonder if they're still there.
There were loads of stinky book shops in Lewes too. And then there's the ones in Charing Cross Road

I much prefer to read a physical book but love the Kindle for holidays as it is more practical.  No lugging several pounds of paperback with me any more.  The downside is that there are far fewer books in the 'library' in apartments and hotels now, so less chance of discovering a new author.

As some of you are aware, my wife is somewhat incapacitated having recently broken her leg.  As a result she has been watching all sorts of rubbish on TV and has discovered a channel called Great Romance or similar.  It's basically low budget movies and even lower quality script and acting.  She called me in to see one yesterday where the basic storyline was American girl meets English Prince.....  Very true to life with all the British Royals wearing sashes and medals even when just walking down the street.  Capped off for me, when the Royal Family finally give approval for the relationship, by said Prince setting off after his girl in a white open carriage drawn by white horses complete with plumes.
That setup even looked too tacky for Jordan to want.  I suspect Meghan Markle saw the film and thought it was a documentary. :D
