I hope it all works out for you @D0rdogne_Damsel and that 2023 is a good year.
We got home yesterday afternoon. Stopped at Sainsbugs for bread and milk. Cottage was cold. OH found some logs for the wood burner in the sitting room but kitchen and breakfast room took ages to heat up. No heating in the kitchen, used little electric heater. Same in France. Why don't people put a radiator in the kitchen? You need one on low when you go away because of the risk of frozen pipes.
Had a chat with both NDNs last night. Elderly lady who fell is a bit better. Other one had collected our post, lots of Christmas cards.
We will go to the SM later but still having coffee in bed. Sounds windy outside.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Morning everyone, horrible wet and windy here, very noisy last night too. Made it to plots yesterday, the only thing I got done was to assemble a frame for a deep bed. I want to move my strawberries this season. This virus is still lingering as after I got home I felt really tired, pathetic. I could do with some of your energy @D0rdogne_Damsel, I doubt I would last one shift at your pace.😅
One disaster at the plots, all my remaining butternut squash must have got frosted, in spite of them being in a dry well insulated store. All rotten &mouldy.
thank you @D0rdogne_Damsel. This thread is a morning pick up, isn't it? I wish I had joined earlier. I am an economic migrant and Luxembourg was - is- very attractive and NOT because "you don't pay taxes" that is a lot of b*******. Only "special" people manage to have bank accounts here without being resident, but it is coming to an end, the tide is changing. We have had our up and downs, but all considering this was the right move. We have been here for 30 years. Now we are retired, the kids have left therefore we feel we are a bit lonely. Health failures don't help anyone of course. We do have friends that we see for walks etc but in the last month they were all busy and when they weren't the weather was lousy, so no rejuvenating walks. Even so this morning I did potter a bit outside, mainly tidying and eyeing the branches of the mirabelle tree that have to be pruned. I did get my battery powered branch cutter 😎 a bit excessive for the one job, but a competent gardener would cost 3 times.
It is hard to get mortgages now, it must be exhausting on top of all the hours you work.
@Busy-Lizzie We do get radiators in Luxembourgish kitchens 😂
@Allotment Boy I am sorry to see that. Your energy levels will rise the moment it is time to plant new squashes! It has been so wet, dampness penetrates everywhere.
A late good morning. After a wet and miserable start, the rain now seems to have stopped and the sky is brightening a little. Perhaps the afternoon will be drier. We had intended going into town this morning but the heavy rain at the time put us off. Instead, I put away the crib, so that’s absolutely everything packed away until next December.
Sorry you seem to be having so many problems @D0rdogne_Damsel, bureaucracy can certainly be a nightmare at times.
Such a shame about your squashes, @Allotment Boy and sorry to read that you are still feeling tired - it does take time to recover, so take it easy.
After a dismal start to the day, the sun is trying to peep out of a very puffy cloudy sky. Cold wind. 9°C a drop from yesterday's 20°C !!
@Busy-Lizzie I hope the house will have warmed up by this evening.
@Allotment Boy This happened to me too. The few squash and pumpkins that managed to "escape" the heat of summer, went mouldy in the garage. Well off the ground on a wire bed. There are now 2 left. Probably best if I brought them in.
@D0rdogne_Damsel Isn't French bureaucracy just the best fun??!! Soooo frustrating! I hope you get through your busy period without your waitress okay. The restaurants open throughout the winter here - really rely on slim pickings!
Enjoy your Saturday whatever you may be doing and go easy on the red!
Keep the faith @D0rdogne_Damsel - you'll get there! I am with @Allotment Boy - I could just about manage a shift at your place but need a proper lie down afterwards. Sorry to see your sorry squashes Allotment boy.
Welcome back @Busy-Lizzie - luckily it's quite mild at the moment and you should soon warm up. But I don't like these dark drizzly days.
I'm working on the year end accounts for our bus. assoc. at the moment - not feeling at all confident that I'm putting the right amounts in the right places - they have to then be submitted to our accountant who will work out what tax, if any, we shall have to pay. One complication is that we paid the foodbank the money collected from the Christmas raffle, but the cash itself has yet to be paid into the bank. We don't have any banks at all in our town, so I drove to the neighbouring town to pay it in - lots of coins; the bag was heavy! Arrived at the bank just after 2pm - only to find that they close the counter then and not 3pm when the bank itself closes. So I had to bring it all home again and will have to make the trip again. Can't pay it in at the post office as I'm not sure they would take all those coins. They certainly wouldn't take coins that don't reach the exact amount printed on the little plastic bags you have to put them in. The bank simply weighs them, so can take odd amounts.
OH in bed feeling poorly. I'm about to trot into town to get the paper.
Afternoon all, it's been absolutely vile here all day with torrential rain and strong winds. We've got a slow puncture in a newish car tyre much to OH's disgust so he was able to give me a lift this morning to the paper shop on his way to the tyre place.
Far too wet to do anything outside so I decided it was a good opportunity to empty out the laundry cupboard, the porch and the welly rack, all of which spaces are going to be needed when we have the new boiler installed. They are going to put it in a more convenient position over the washing machine so it's facing the doors, at the moment you have to screw yourself sideways to see the controls. Amazed at the amount of rubbish I'd accumulated so had a good clearout.
OH had a nice surprise, his belated Xmas presie from my daughter arrived, a super new wool jumper. She'd accidentally left it on the dining room table whilst packing the car to come up.
The joys of being self-employed @D0rdogne_Damsel, I remember it well, although I wasn't so employed for very long. I hated doing my tax returns.
Radiators aren't usually installed in kitchens @Busy-Lizzie supposedly because of all the cooking! We do have a big one though in our dining room half which is adequate to heat both spaces as it's all open plan.
That is a big shame about your squashes @Allotment Boy, hope you feel better soon.
We have a radiator in the kitchen? Isn’t that normal? Thank you, @Pat E ! Just finished ‘Earthly Delights ‘ by Kerry Greenwood! Borrowed from our on line library. Unusual, and very Australian, had to look up a few translations, but enjoyed it very much. I’ve downloaded the next one to read later! Just settling down with a glass of vino to watch the new Top Gun, Christmas pressie from son to OH. Saturday Night at the Movies!

Welcome back @Busy-Lizzie ... it is a bit blowy today.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
