  • Sorry, late reply to @Fairygirl - computer was playing up yesterday and not allowing me to post anything.  Well remembered about my Glasgow to Oban trips!  I investigated doing it by bus, but with a railcard and early booking it was cheaper as well as quicker by train.

@coccinella - the train from Glasgow Queen Street to Oban is highly recommended!  The route is absolutely lovely, and in May the woods you pass through are full of bluebells.   :)  The trick is to book as soon as tickets become available, which is about 12 weeks before travel, to get the best prices.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

I am looking into a trip to Scotland in May. Start from Glasgow up to Oban and on to the isle of Mull to see the Puffins (all by trains and buses). Tips gratefully received.
You won't have any problems with public transport @coccinella. Train or bus will take you from Glasgow to Oban and straight onto the ferry for Craignure on Mull. There is a regular bus  service around the island, get on and off wherever you want.

I do the trip every year but travel by car. If I can help with info feel free to ask.

    I was just being pedantic @steephill ;)
It's only the height that defines mountains. Many Corbetts are a much tougher walk than some mountains - as I'm sure you know. The Cobbler certainly isn't a hill to mess with, especially if you're going 'up the front'. It was one of the places used for rock climbing, so the gullies and crags are not to be sniffed at.
Whiteouts are lethal - no matter what height you're at. I seem to remember my boss being snarky about those girls turning back, on that day I mentioned, on their walk. It was clag/rain rather than snow, as it was summer, but it's just as dangerous. I put her straight. I'd better not repeat some of the other things she said  :|

I'm having endless problems with my laptop too @Liriodendron. Daughter looked at it, and it seems to be the internal router[?] or summat. It cuts out regularly, and I often just give up with it. Great that you and @Uff are able to help @coccinella :)

I meant to say that I enjoyed your link @steephill, even if I wasn't sure which one was your Dad.   ;)
This is the only pic I have of the Sloy Dam - taken at the end of May 2015, from Beinn Narnain's neighbour A' Chrois - a fine walk via The Spearhead on Narnain

I remember my Dad talking about the SS prisoners being a bad lot :o , the other Germans hated them too.

That inscription is very moving @steephill. Appropriate for today, as the text says.

I can imagine those SS prisoners probably enjoyed being disruptive.

@pansyface, it's the same here on the North Downs, we've lost so many trees☹️. On a happier note, this morning dawned crisp and bright.

Lovely photos @scrogginand @pansyface . I should have taken the camera with me this morning when I was out. I could have got some good frosty pix.  :)
A great shame re the trees. We don't have it round here, although I believe there's been ash dieback in areas in the east.  :/

How lovely! And well done for arranging the sun for your walks, it is so grey here.

Can they plant new ones? Or is the soil contaminated with the fungus? So sad.
