Interesting project @Nollie, what is the wood that are you using?, it has quite a coarse grain. Are you going to be able to get a tight enough butt joint using hinges?, I'd maybe consider glued, dowelled joints but the accuracy needed in drilling for dowels would be a b*gger, biscuit joints maybe? It's a challenge.
@HarryWhite my Gabriel Oak has finished the second season and it threw 2 to 3 tall (should be 120cm atleast) basels last year. Please look at the taller stem on the left side. I love the scent and the glowing bright pink flower.
My Gabriel Oak does blackspot and defoliate completely mid season and gets new leaves, a bit like older DA roses and unlike other recent introductions.
Edit: this might be just my experience but I thought I will post it, as I don't think it is a perfect rose.
I've got 6 roses in a roughly 12 foot border but it's wider and they are staggered..
I think in a narrower border, I would go with 3 larger ones, 4.5 feet plus, separated by 4 or 5 feet, or 5 smaller ones which are under 4 feet tall.. as I like to leave room for companion plants, or fill in with other things while they develop..
Thank you @Marlorena. That makes a lot of sense and I will take all that into consideration. I do want to plant some bee-friendly hardy geranium so I’ll probably go for 5 smaller. Thanks again.
@owd potter My projects involve more brute force and ignorance over any special woodworking skills! I’ve no idea what the wood border edging is, I would’ve said just well-seasoned and treated pine but it seems rather heavy for that. I don’t have a biscuit tool but did consider gluing and dowelling. The angles are indeed challenging, so it will doubtless end up some bodged combination of methods.
@owd potter. Six DA’s in that border! That has made me very happy, thank you. Now to choose, always the fun part! ☺️
Plus a rambler!! I have in my border: Ghislaine de Feligonde, Desdemona, Lady Emma H, Vanessa Bell, Lichfield angel, Roald Dahl, and a yellow floribunda that I relocated which may be Arthur Bell. (Be nice if it was, Arthur & Vanessa Bell in a bed together...) I staggered and triangulated my planting along the border, like this
Just looked back to your original post, and I see you say 2'-3' wide, which may not allow you room to stagger them much, so maybe reduce the number, depending on variety, as noted by M.
Ooooh! How does Desdemona do there @owd potter"? I’ve always wanted it but didn’t think it would do well there.
You did ask before to see how everyone's roses were progressing, here are some of mine. My best I would say is my red standard Please excuse the hubby DIY ing a new light. The best colour is my Ruby Wedding. But I love the bronze/red of Sheila's Perfumed. Desdemona is appearing slowly @Allyblueeyes but was new in June last year, so is still in its tub. The two I'm most proud of are the cuttings I took 18 months ago. They went into the greenhouse the first winter, into a corner of the garden all summer, and then were put amongst the rest outside for the winter. The green pot is a yellow Celebration But the blue one has yet to flower ( faded labels 🤦♀️) but I think it might be a Blue for You because of all the prickles on the new growth.
Still horrid and cold up here ... but at least there is some winter sun. Forecast for a week of sub zero night time temperatures.
Nothing to show re roses as we are probably about 2-3 weeks behind you all in the tropics of the south.
So here are two pics of what is looking good at the moment, our reticulatas. First is the end of 'Pauline' but the 'Harmony' is now kicking in with a beautiful blue colour.

Some summer photos of the East garden:
And for @Marlorena, Salvia So Cool Pale Blue:
No not just you, again that's my experience too re: defoliation.
Rhapsody in Blue also regularly defoliates but I don't mind. Worth it for the main flush and because it's at the back other plants hide it anyway.
I've taken some cuttings of GO to grow in some other locations and see if they do any better.
