Look fabulous, Vic... Hippolyte is an intriguing one. Do you have other once-flowerers? How long does their flush last? If it's a good month's worth, it would then be better value than some fast-shattering repeat-flowerers with blink-and-you-miss-it flushes. 🤔
Hi everyone.. tried to catch up with the news here whenever I can.. kinda busy till January.. Good to see everyone still got lot of roses to show.. Truly long flowering plants I would say plus the bonus of being scented..
welcome @HarryWhite wow, so much space to work with..
I did read all the news here from time to time.. welcome to all new comers.. Delighted to see Marlorena, hope you get well soon.. I am not sure if it was bcpathome who had a cardiac condition.. sounded pretty serious.. wishing you a speedy recovery..
(I feel I had missed mentioning many others but cannot recollect them)
Now back to roses.. A late review on some new purchases.. (all fragrant, unless specified otherwise)
Soul- Strong fragrance, does tend to ball but better than some of the others.. Arching habit and flowers in clusters.. similar to Golden Celebration in that aspect..
Dioressence- Fl, fantastic colour, rain resistant, not many petals but has huge blooms in clusters of 4-6..
Twice in a Blue Moon- HT, rain resistant, blooming even now..
Strawberry Hill- good repeat flowering and I love the colour.. more like Bubblegum pink.. rain resistant..
Both the new Austins- good for flowering.. Elizabeth seems to be goin on as if its spring.. not affected by rain..
Domaine de Chantily- love the egg yolk-ey shape/ colour.. could ball (not sure as they are not in bloom now)
Artemis- blooms in flushes, but when it rains, it pours.... downside will be the scent which can be appreciated only the the morning on a good sunny day..
Scepter'd Isle- as above except for the scent bit..
Amazing day- blooms in flushes, but behaves like an old garden rose when it does as the blooms keep on coming for weeks..
Enchantress- late addition, blooms in clusters.. did get rust when I stopped spraying..
Gruss an Teplitz- did not provide me with much flowers this time.. cannot tame it.. just wants to send long canes..
Clementina Carbonieri- continuous bloomer.. balls in the rain.. even now it keep producing buds.. will keep it purely for the strong pure Tea scent..
Natalija- pheno geno.. good for flowering..
Henri Delbard- throws huge canes, sometimes flowers in clusters of 3-4, huge bi-colour blooms..
Few that did not make the list..
Rose de Molinard- being emptied out off the pot to the ground.. terrible for wet weathers and throws long canes..
Thanks a Million- flowers well with good foliage.. to me it has only on mild spicy scent..
Celine Forestier- They say it needs a few years before it gets going.. moved to ground for now as I was disappointed by the scent..
Theo clevers- flowering in flushes.. blooms last long and not affected by rain/ sun.. moving to the ground as its scent was disappointing despite TW mentioning it as strongly fragrant..
Platinum Jubilee- only plant which I did not remove from the pot it was sent.. a Harkness rose.. their description said that it was strongly fragrant with good disease resistance.. purchased it in August.. Mildewed in 2 weeks.. lots of small 1.5- 2inch blooms but hardly fragrant.. now the Harkness site changed the rating to medium fragrance.. a poor stunt by the PR team misleading people to buy their new roses.. never would trust a Harkness rose again.. shame as their old roses were good.. may be they should fire who ever is managing their website/ rose catalogue.. yes even their rose catalogue had fragrance etc mixed up...
@HarryWhite - Welcome and I’m very envious of that beautiful view! I’ve got a concrete and red painted metal MOT garage 😂
Looking forward to seeing how your garden develops.
Malvern Hills is a great rose, mine’s climbing the house wall.
Thanks @cooldoc, just starting to get a few hours sleep overnight now after two weeks of practically zero! First day back at work after paternity leave was very hard, but thankfully he slept better that night. Regaining some sanity now.
He’s a lovely calm little boy though which is nice and his older brothers are being exceptionally sweet with him, they obviously adore him already.
That’s going to be a fab border Harry, exciting stuff.
@cooldoc great to hear from you and thanks for the helpful and informative reviews. Try not to give up on the ‘disappointing fragrance’ ones just yet if they are really good in other ways, scent can also take a couple of seasons to fully develop!
I do find TW a tad optimistic on fragrance ratings, some they rate as strong are barely there for me even in established roses. Interesting your Soul and GC’s habits are similar, mine couldn’t be more different! Though a lot depends on the individual specimen, your climate, weather, growing conditions, soil type and even what you feed them with.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
True Nollie.. they do get better with age.. notably the flowering bit.. Ab fab has been a non stop bloomer in its second year.. what bothers me is when the breeders who observe them for "7+years" get it mixed up and say something first and then change it. I have noticed that to my nose, the DA description of the fragrance is close to what I think (in terms of how fragrant the flower is)..
On the topic of scent, Tantau rates Augusta Luise higher than Soul.. but to my nose Soul has a stronger old rose fragrance whilst AL has moderate scent at best and has not improved in its second year.. How do others feel about AL's fragrance? I have kept it in the 'watch list' group for now...
and thanks for posting your fragrant roses list Nollie..
My fingers would be itching to plant that bed @HarryWhite 😁 and while this is a rose thread my first thought would be a couple of apple trees 😊 , but I'm sure your thinking climbing roses.😁

Nellie, yes I have the bug 😆
I must have, I'll be out in the wind and rain over the next 2 days filling this border

oops.. that was a lengthy post...
Yes, it's about 5.5ft wide and around 33ft long. Gets sun from almost sunrise to about 3 pm. Zero shade is a bit of a concern.

Interesting your comments about various roses, Mr Vine Eye.
Harry, the bed looks great! What are you planting there?
