I've a couple of questions i hope you can help me with.
What defines a rose that is good for cutting? Is it because it lasts longer in the vase? Is it because it's thorn less? Scented? A combination of things?
Also, does anyone have Gabriel Oak or Queen of Sweden in their garden? Do they grow roughly to the size stated by DA? I would love to see photos or hear a bit more about these two. TIA.
I've just seen Ronnie O'Sullivan at the garden center. I think he was eyeing up a plant.
@HarryWhite - hi Harry, I assume it’ll be a combination of things like you said.
Ive only got Gabriel Oak out of those two and I’ve found it to be very slow growing! It’s still barely bigger than a first year rose and I’ve had it at least three years now. That could just be me.
Not the easiest to pick out against the netting, sorry, but Gabriel Oak after two seasons (unpruned as yet). It did brilliantly through all weathers last year and had several flushes. It's banished to the back bit of the garden as some of my family members really dislike the scent, but I like it.
According to something I read "good for cutting" supposedly means it lasts at least a week in the vase. Not to do with scent as Tranquillity smells of nothing very much but DA describe it as "ideal for cutting" (it lasts about nine days in the vase for me).
My early bloom is an anomaly even for my climate, and the Bolero was a new purchase (ie greenhouse grown and early) so no need to rush the new thread on my account. Mr. Vine Eye's idea of spring equinox is a good one. 9:24 sharp please!
Earth Angel is simply picture-perfect. Disappointing about the balling in rain, though, so I'll have to enjoy from afar.
To me, any rose for cutting could be combination of factors you mentioned @HarryWhite. The flowers I like on my desk when WFH needs to be scented, whereas for a vase in the lounge, I like those with erect stems and good form. HTs usually have good size bloom and are borne on long stems; so good for cutting. I have QoS and it has nice cupped blooms, a baby pink colour and upright growth; most DAs have drooping blooms though.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
Thank you all. Good to hear your thoughts on these two.
I have close to 50 new/young roses in my garden now, is it wrong that i've yet to buy a pink one? I have room left for another 12 - 16 roses at most and i guess it's time i included a few.
They are for a single border, with possibly under planting, against a dark panelled, 5 ft fence.
Queen of Sweden i've got to put in somewhere, i have a Swedish nephew and niece, my brother moved there 25 yrs ago and they are coming over in June. And although i'm buying because of this i also like the fact the blooms face upwards. From what i've seen though i think i'd probably have to underplant.
Thank you for sharing the photo's @WAMS You've convinced me even more to buy GO. I'm surprised to hear it's a debatable scent!

finally pruned pink cloud, trained and defoliated. I ‘m doing on this one more circles and twirls training… so let’s see…
With me it is Maria Lisa the furthest along.
Unfortunately noticed also mildew on some new growth of Guirlande so I have pruned it out 🫤. In the hope that that is the end of it. Furthermore also noticed it on some new growth of Maria Lisa 😞. What do I do prune it out and no flowers then since it is a once flowering . Or just hope it shakes it off …
We didn’t get any of the -7c forecast and the snow didn’t last, but it’s still -2 to -3 most mornings with sunny but cold days, Marlorena. Heat can arrive with a bang here and if we get to the predicted 25c by next weekend the roses will doubtless catch up fast.
Lovey pix of Earth Angel and Gabriel above.
@HarryWhite you definitely need some pink in your life! Are you looking for recommendations and if so, climbers or shrubs and how much sun does your fence get?
Well my excavation project, otherwise known as the new rose bed, is progressing slowly. I’ve got the last of the big boulders out with the exception of one whopper but I’m working around that by doing a curved end to form a maximum length of just over 3m or 10ft.
Cutting the semicircle has been fun, now got to work out how to fix the angled pieces together.. I’m currently thinking hinged door brackets..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Wow @Nollie, that's some project. Glad to see The Smudge is assisting
I hadn't forgotten I said I'd start the new thread, I'd written it down for the equinox also, but I am most happy for @Marlorena to start it instead as I am always miles behind with the thread at the minute. Am going away for 3 weeks at the end of the month with work and am trying to get lots of tasks in prior
Welcome back @edhelka, I look forward to seeing your lovely garden again this year.
I hope you are recovering @pitter-patter and I hope all went well.
One rose from me, the untrustworthy Midnight Blue which is getting a second chance this year in a part shade location.
