@rossdriscoll13 Hi, no of course you haven’t offended anybody and likewise I hope I haven’t offended you, as I say that’s just my take. All contributions are very welcome. I was just gently (I hope) pointing out that your pruning advice for ‘first year David Austin roses’ plural, which I took as meaning all of them, isn’t appropriate to their entire catalogue or back catalogue. Many of us also grow their out of patent or long discontinued roses, which are somewhat different beasts and still (just!) available from other sources. Steve’s advice is certainly a departure from their usual, interesting, perhaps he was referring to their more recent introductions. Whatever you do, it’s pretty hard to kill a modern repeat flowering shrub rose with pruning, so no worries..

Thank you, @Nollie. I will follow your advice. I did mean the flowering laterals. I do like the flowers and the scent, but it’s a bit too high maintenance at the moment.
Hi Newbie here, not sure if there's a newbie thread but i found my way here for your rose pic's, help, tips etc and your general love of roses.
About me - I'd left the garden for around 20 years, doing nothing but mowing the lawn, leaving every weed known to man in the borders and edges. I'd been lazy and lacked interest.
But early last year i found myself with more time on my hands (kids all grown up and flown the nest now) and i'd saved a fund to finally tackle the garden. I have a fantastic view from my back garden (South/West facing) and now feel the need to compliment it.
I have no idea how but i have suddenly found a love for roses, mainly DA's, well all DA's actually and have acquired quite a few last year including Fellowship, Iceberg, Worcestershire, LOS, Lichfield Angel and The Lark Ascending. They have all done well, to a degree, considering i didn't spray. I will be organically spraying next year for sure.
They've done well enough to make me want more and i have just had more bare root roses delivered, The Country Parson, Summer Song, William and Catherine, Blue for You and Bring me Sunshine.
My first and favourite rose i bought though was a Malvern Hills Rambler. With The Malverns in the background, i dont think i could of planted anything else there...
Hard to believe how fast this one has grown.
I'm still learning and I'm looking forward to seeing your photo's and reading your posts.
I've just seen Ronnie O'Sullivan at the garden center. I think he was eyeing up a plant.
@WhereAreMySecateurs the course was very good. I took alot away from it on how to prune David Austins repeat flowering shrub roses. However there were things that surprised me like the fact he told us that you don’t need to worry about pruning above a bud or making a slanting cut. I’ve always been taught you have to cut above a bud with a slanting cut. You can also use the measuring gauge idea for 2 year old + David Austin shrub roses. Measure the height of the rose, halve that measurement a cut a garden cane to that half measurement. Place in the centre of the rose and cut all rose canes to the height of your gauge. Maybe a bit of a faff for some but I find it useful. From the second year onwards with repeat flowering DA shrub roses YOU control the height. If you want a tall shrub prune it by a third but if you want a shorter shrub prune by a half.
@HarryWhite, wow, what a fabulous view and a very appropriate and nicely trained Malvern Hills to frame it. You do realise once you get the rose bug there is no going back? 😆 Look forward to seeing more of your garden and lovely selection of roses in future.

Sorry the photo's a bit blurred.
