Driving round Upper Norwood was never easy as the roads are narrow and the hills areĀ very steep @Lizzie27. I felt similarly to you the last time I was in Central Croydon,Ā the circumstance weren't goodĀ (I was there to register the sudden death of my brother). When IĀ came out of East Croydon StationĀ I hardly recognised it and IĀ felt like a foreigner in my old hometown.Ā Ā @AnnaB Jack Lanes nurseryĀ was about 2/3 rds the way up from the New Addington end. You are rightĀ Wates bought the whole Valley and built on it but Jack refused to go so they just built round him. IĀ imagine they finally got that bit when he passed on.Ā Len initially moved just up the road to West Wickham,Ā but later moved to Devon. Len had a mixed holding of pigs, poultry, and some market gardening, he used to supplyĀ poultryĀ Ā veg and salad to some of the Hotels and restaurants,Ā including Selsdon Park,Ā he also collected kitchen waste to make swill for the pigs, so it was a very circular arrangement.Ā He had a hatchery, so couldĀ buy fertilised eggs, cheaper than buying chick's. Thie big times were Christmas and EasterĀ Ā my father and another brother went to help with the chickens and Turkeys, all plucked by hand. We had some of our summer holidays there to give Len and his family a break , we realised much later it wasn't much of a holiday for Mum and Dad,Ā be me my brother and Sister thought it was great fun.Ā Ā I know Dove had a smallholding at one time so IĀ expect this is all very familiar.Ā
Morning all. The snow has disappeared from our range this morning, but it doesnāt feel much like it. On a plus side, the skiers at Perisher and nearby ski resorts Ā are jubilant. Canāt please everyone., I guess.Ā
Town day today, plus Dr visit for me for my regular 2 monthly checkup, blood test for Hubby before he sees his Oncologist on Friday, then he has another trip to Canberra for an eye checkup. Busy, busy. Ā Next week wonāt be any easier I think. He has dentist and podiatry appts.Ā
I was woken by a brief touch of a cold nose on the cheek this morning šš. Ā Pixel is good at letting me know when itās time to get up. š³. Sheās so affectionate lately. Must be getting more relaxed with us. Ā
Iām not looking forward Ā doing some washing tomorrow if this cold spell continues. Itās very cold on the fingers pegging wet clothes on the line.Ā
Morning/afternoon @Pat E, sorry that you are having such cold weather, surely it should be getting a bit warmer now for you? Good luck with all your appointments over the next couple of weeks. Give the lovely Pixel a gentle stroke from me please.
Good morning all š āļøĀ Weāve been awake for some time ⦠thereās a cat on the studio/garage roof demanding to be rescued. It has a real yowl.Ā
OH is out there with a stepladder and cat biscuits but although itāll come close enough to have itās head stroked he canāt get hold of it. Reason says, if it got up there it can get down, itās a cat and itās not high up ⦠but it seems to want us to do something and keeps yowling very loudly and insistently at the bathroom window. Ā
For the moment OH has left the stepladder just below the gutter with some cat biscuits on the top step ā¦. if all else fails we might have to seek help from the builders working down the road ⦠they have ladders and scaffold planks.Ā
Itās a cat Iāve seen about, but Iāve no idea where it lives ..,Ā OH is in the bathroom shaving ⦠the cat is yowling loudly ⦠watch this space ā¦

Will do AnnaB. Iām certain that Pixel will appreciate it. Ā Been to my Doc. My Bp was up, but I canāt say Iām surprised. Iām out of practice driving and am finding my car hard to keep the speed even. Feel like a beginner after all these years (I got my first licence in 1960). Just shows how important it is to keep Hubby out of the driving seat for a while. š. To make things even more difficult, our council recently reduced the speed limit in town from 60 to 50. Crazy hard to remember. My foot has its own memory.Ā
Morning everyone,Ā poor night's sleep last night.Ā Woke up twice very hot, we had / have very heavy clouds and humidity but no signs of rain. While we were away a flock of parakeets seems to have moved in nearby grrš
Update re Yowly Cat ... she (for it is a she) must've been very thirsty ... (she's quite thin - wonder if she has a kidney condition?) anyway, OH put a dish of water up on the roof and she drank most of it then must've made her way back down ... not sure which route she took; whether she used OH's ladder or jumped onto the fence or what ... but anyway, she spent half an hour wandering around our front garden yowling loudly but then the roadsweeper came and she must've gone off somewhere ... I did put a message on our local 'Next Door' message board, but no one's responded.Ā I feel slightly crotchety ... it was very early when she woke us and I didn't get back to sleep ... I've also been down to the shop for a replacement sponge for the floor mop and they only had those floor mops that you have to use with a 'baby wipe thingummy' and some spray ... Ā£30 for a 'starter kit' !!! I've come back home for a coffee then we'll go to Homebase or Jewsons or somesuch and get a new squeezy sponge to go on our mop ... one that we can put in a bucket of water and wash the floor properly with ... can you tell I'm a bit cantankerous this morning?Ā Hurrumph!Ā š

I really don't understand how those 'mops' with baby wipes on them can do any good @Dovefromabove - and where does the used wipe go?Ā Landfill!Ā I much prefer a proper mop and, if it comes to it, hands and knees and a scrubbing brush.Ā We have a stone floor in our kitchen so it does come to that sometimes. I doubt @Hostafan1 will have much sympathy for your yowling cat, but pleased that his daughter's cat has decided to like him - regardless of what he writes about the cat kingdom on here! But precious times with your grandson (s) Hosta.Ā Ā I have driven through Croydon.Ā Does that count?
Just waiting for the chap to come and install the plate rack we had him build.Ā Local bespoke kitchen builders - very classy!Ā He said mid morning.Ā That's now in my book!
Off to daughter's for dinner this evening to celebrate our eldest granddaughter's 17th! Better get wrapping the clothes I ordered for her (she sent links - there's no way I would be able to choose something she might actually want to wear myself!).Ā But she has some little bits to unwrap too.
Such a wrench for you, packing Charlie up for school @D0rdogne_Damsel.Ā If he has an August birthday does that mean he, like my granddaughter, is the youngest in his class?
