Rain and sun today... ive also found two of those chafer beetles eating roses. I evicted them elsewhere! Loads of ladybird larvae munching aphids too. Macmillan nurse Albertine at the back with wedding day starting to open. Its awful in rain though, it showers petals everywhere and gums up other buds. Deep secret Diamond eyes CPM, glenfidditch, munstead wood, purple tiger, LoS through obelisk. Cpm through other side of the arch with eyes for you in background.
That The Range fence looks so good. Not sure if it will keep my border collie out of the borders but I would like just a few untrampled things.
Zugenie, Google is saying neem oil, baking soda or sulphur to treat powdery mildew? Seems a few people have had it on their BMS (here and on Facebook).š
No photos today as it is raining heavily here; the whole area around the rose plants is covered with petals. I am going to have to do lots of cleaning work over the weekend.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
My BMS is looking really healthy thankfully but I understand the frustration! Powdery mildew is the bane of my rose wedding day, airflow increasing helped but its still plastered in it again this year. It looks so unsightly and can damage buds. Urgh.
Anyone else have hoards of rose sawfly flying about? Itās like one of the plaguesā¦unfortunately as well, well unfortunate for me but fortunate for them, Iāve very recently made a commitment not to kill anything so I guess this will be an interesting experiment on whether the birds and other beasties can keep things under control without my usual intervention.Ā
@Omori I'm getting more and more partial to HT's, and what a great colour 'Deep Secret' is. Have you had it long, and how does it stand up to the northern weather.Ā
@Omori A few weeks ago it seemed that almost anything that was flying around was a sawfly, such was their number. But I decided to embark on a programme of eradication, going out numerous times during the day to dispatch them before they could settle and lay their eggs, and a few weeks later their numbers are massively reduced with no signs of caterpillars. It's time consuming but effective.
Best is to do it on a sunny day to encourage the good bacteria growth.Ā
It will not eliminate it but it can reduce and contain it. My pink cloud had a serious infection and is slowly shredding it of. Kept it watered well on hot and sunny days.Ā
got the advice of somebody how grows eating grapes š. Only be careful with slugs then! You can add some saltā¦
I too an quite disappointed with David Austin's 2 new offerings this year. I purposely didn't buy Elizabeth because I didn't like the washed out pink colour in the marketing pictures, but got Bring me Sunshine because I am missing that colour. Well here is a picture of both new roses take at Chelsea Flower show, a lovely pink rose and a yellow! Also my BMS is covered with Powdery mildew which I'm fighting against unsuccessfully.
@Imprevu do you have a recipe for it that you wouldnāt mind sharing?
@TracyP itās really frustrating, weāve had such consistent rain and Iāve been watering when itās not been raining. I noticed it on another plant yesterday too.
I donāt think it can be airflow this year, the border and roses are newly planted so thereās a good amount of space around everything
